Painted Beastmen Brayherds army - third set of miniatures

Painted Beastmen Brayherds invade the Old World

If you travel to the twisted wilds of the Old World of Warhammer, remain cautious because you may stumble upon this sinister, forest-themed Beastmen army!

If you are not scared to enter the forest, let’s take a look at that twisted and warped herd that emerged from Thymos.Theos’ creative mind. See his trademark grimdark style and subtle but eyecatching OSL – lighting effects painted on the miniatures. All this gives those paintd Beastmen Brayherds a dark, haunting presence, so watch out!

The Concept Behind This Grimdark Beastmen Army

To be perfectly fair, the concept for this commissioned army came from the customer. He wanted a particular aesthetic, reminding of a magical, eerie, haunting forest. And there would be no better choice for this project than our Thymos.Theos. He is easily recognizable for his dark fantasy miniatures, so he’s a natural or grimdark Warhammer painting! He gave this concept his own, personal twist.

The army has been split into several batches, just like we often do with larger projects. So far, we’ve done three sets, but now, with the recent announcement of the new Arcane Journal: Beastmen Brayherds, we will be following up with more!

Here’s the first batch:

The second batch focused on heavier units:

The most recent, third batch included a variety of units. From infantry to large beasts and chariots!

Painted Beastmen miniatures – Overview

So what do we have so far? Let’s give it a quick overview!

Let’s start with characters:

  • Great Bray Shaman on foot – the centerpiece of the first wave of this Beastmen army, a caster with eerie OSL and weathered robes,
  • Malagor the Dark Omen – the centerpiece of the second wave, used as a second Great Bray Shaman,
  • Great Bray Shaman on Tuskgor Chariot – the centerpiece of the third wave, repeating the same stylistic choices as previously.

Units

  • Ungor archers – a mass of light infantry, the bulk of the first wave,
  • Gors with full command group – the backbone of the herd, added in the third wave,
  • Chaos Warhounds – fast and feral; tied into the rest of their army with their dark fur and visible mutations,
  • Razorgors (converted from AoS Gruntas) – now these are definitely not the kind of razorgors you would expect. These are not the “Pumba-wannabes” that you know, but proper, bulky, disgusting and smelly hogs that you can see if you remove armor from Age of Sigmar Gruntas!

The heavy-hitters

  • Tuskgor Chariots – pay attention to details here, and you will be able to see some miserable elves, who were unfortunate enough to get captured by the Beastmen and were used here to enhance the grimdark feel of these painted Beastmen Brayherds chariot miniatures,
  • Dragon Ogres & Dragon Ogre Shartak – you may wonder where in the range between beastmen and dragons they are. But no matter where, they still remain big, scary, and monstrous,
  • Greater Chaos Spawn – As if the original Forge World miniature is not grotesque and disturbing enough, Thymos.Theos has added his own grimdark touch to make it even more so!

What’s next? Well, that depends on what changes the Arcane Journal brings. 🙂 But we are expecting the next waves to follow, as the army is still not complete. And the client was very happy with what we did!

Let me quote his comments here:

I love what was done with Malagor! The hints of blue on the feathers, bone, and skin really carry the theme through the model. I’m really excited about how the army is coming along.

or:

Got all the minis on Wednesday and everything looks great! The whole army together has a dark vibe to it and the blue theme really pop. Excited to get it on the table tomorrow!

and finally:

Had an amazing time with the army at the tournament this weekend! It looked beautiful on the battlefield.

What Warhammer painting techniques were used on these grimdark miniatures?

If you are familiar with Thymos.Theos and his works, you will know that he loves his dark palettes enhanced with OSL effects.

OSL stands for Object Source Lighting and basically means light effects that are actually painted on miniatures. Without them, the miniatures might seem dark, but smart use of OSL allowed Thymos to give this whole army an eerie and dark fantasy feel, while still retaining its grimdark vibe.

The overall color choices here are muted, desaturated, and dark. They make the miniatures look sinister and believable. As if they were real inhabitants of a dark, haunted, magical forest.
