I am working again after the break I took to push our furniture around our flat and to tame an Alien with keyboard.
After two years my tablet was finally retired and I could no longer pretend it worked. I don’t like changing my equipment – I get emotionally tied to it. The Alien is already tamed, but I haven’t got to like it yet.

Some of you may feel that NMM on a historical model is an offense against the tradition… but I don’t know much about traditions and etiquette of historical model painting.
I am a fantasy painter, so it shouldn’t be anything strange that there will be contrast and the color of ground will come from a completely unidentified region. I also haven’t researched renaissance embroidery techniques, which kind of makes me feel bad.
Niektórzy mogą potraktować NMM na historycznym modelu jak policzek dla tradycji… ale ja niewiele wiem o tradycjach i etykiecie malowania modeli historycznych. Jestem malarzem fantastyki, więc nic dziwnego, że będzie kontrast, a kolor gleby będzie z bliżej niezidentyfikowanego regionu. Nie zgłębiałam też technik haftów renesansowych, z czym akurat źle się czuję.
I surf the internet, but in evenings I lack concentration so my eyes focus on silly things. For example on this swanky pose of this guy, making him look so modern that he could easily show off on Facebook 😉 (warning, vacation selfie included)
Trochę buszuję po sieci, ale wieczorami brak mi koncentracji i mój wzrok skupia się na głupotach. Np. na pozerskiej postawie, tak bardzo uwspółcześniającej gościa, że śmiało mógłby się lansować na Facebooku. 😉 (uwaga – pozowana fotka z wakacji)
I managed to take a walk on the weekend and bring home some useful weeds:

And after the weekend I returned to my brushwork with a heavy tummy (after 2 parties) and lacking rest. Not much progress on the Monday but it’s no surprise – Mondays should be official holidays allowing people to rest after weekends. 😉
A po weekendzie wróciłam z ciężkim brzuchem (2 imprezy) i zerowym wypoczęciem do pędzla. Nie wiele dziś drgnęło, ale co się dziwić – poniedziałki powinny być ustawowo wolne, by móc odpoczywać po weekendzie 😉
And while in kindergarten, Balrog made a scarf and cape for the knight. I promised I’ll pack them with him for the trip.

Fascinated and terrified with the details I reached out for the box. My enthusiasm died when I picked up a few tiny elements from the box.
Have the last smaller models made me lazy? I gave a closer look to the parts of the model and my smile disappeared even more when I noticed ugly mold lines on every single feather:
Zachwycona i przerażona ilością detali sięgnęłam po pudełko. Zapał szybko mi przygasł, kiedy wyjęłam z pudła garść drobnych części.
Rozleniwiona mniejszymi modelami, zaczęłam przyglądać się elementom i jeszcze bardziej spełzł mi uśmiech kiedy zobaczyłam brzydkie nadlewki na wszystkich piórach:
I used a Dremel tool to smooth the feather surfaces. And when I got rid of the flash and mold lines (and also not-so-subtle sculpt of the feather texture) I regained hope of enjoyable brushwork. Sometimes it’s better to remove messy textures. And even more frequently my joy of painting is ruined by sculptors, who sculpt details in an untidy way – mop-like hair, or wings covered with feathers which look as if their owner just survived a hurricane.
I really respect sculptors, who manage to restrain themselves when it comes to covering their sculpts with details. One of such sculptors is Kevin White (Hasslefree Miniatures). Such not-over-complicated sculpt has one additional advantage: it stimulates creativity, leaves more creative freedom to the painter. Yes, it’s definitely my favorite kind of sculpting!
Pomogłam sobie Dremlem i wygładziłam powierzchnie piór. Jak tylko pozbyłam się nadlewek, a przy okazji mało subtelnej rzeźby piór, nadzieja na przyjemne pędzlowanie do mnie wróciła. Czasem lepiej pozbyć się niestarannej faktury. A już najczęściej mi rzeźbiarze psują frajdę z malowania, rzeźbiąc niechlujnie detale : włosy jak mopy, czy skrzydła z piórami, jakby ich właściciel cudem przeżył zetknięcie z huraganem.Bardzo cenię sobie rzeźbiarzy, którzy potrafią zachować umiar w pokrywaniu rzeźby detalami. Do takich zalicza się Kevin White (Hassleefree Miniatures). Nie przekombinowana rzeźba ma jeszcze jedną zaletę. Pobudza kreatywność, pozostawia większą swobodę malarzowi. Tak, to zdecydowanie mój ulubiony typ rzeźby!
Kev White’s sculpts leave a lot of freedom for the painter
There are some great sculpts with every millimeter of surface planned and covered with details. I think they must be most eagerly purchased by collectors and painters who are happy to get easy results by simply picking out details with a wash (not that I am picking at anybody ;-)). These models nearly color themselves without much help from the painter, and the results are quick to achieve and so they can easily make the painter happy. I have some miniatures like that at home :-)) They sit in a drawer unpainted – I consider them finished works. For me they don’t require coloring. They already have pretty lace, embroidery and details like a torn band, carved handle of a weapon, and some real gems even beautifully captured facial expressions. Mood captured in every millimeter of the sculpt. So I watch them and wonder “why would I cover it with paint?”
But most frequently I need to file off the sculptor’s over-eagerness to save some fun for myself. I hope nobody feels offended with what I wrote, but it’s more of a matter of my personal preference and taste.
Są na rynku świetne rzeźby, z zaplanowanym każdym milimetrem powierzchni. Kupują je chyba najchętniej kolekcjonerzy i Ci, którzy po washu cieszą się efektem końcowym osiągniętym bez wysiłku (nie wytykam nikomu, ;-)). To modele, co się same kolorują, a szybki efekt wzbudza entuzjazm). Mam trochę takich figurek w domu :-)). Leżą w szufladzie nie pomalowane – uważam je za dzieło skończone. Dla mnie one nie wymagają pokolorowania. Mają piękne koronki, hafty, obszarpaną przepaskę, rzeźbioną rękojeść, a prawdziwe perełki mają nawet cudnie uchwycony wyraz twarzy. Nastrój wyrzeźbiony w każdym milimetrze. Patrze na nie i myślę “Po co to przykrywać farbą?”
Ale najczęściej, żeby nie psuć sobie zabawy, muszę spiłować nadgorliwość rzeźbiarza. Mam nadzieję, że nikt nie poczuł się dotknięty – to indywidualna sprawa i moje preferencje.

All the corrections took me more time than it should due to some quadrupeds playing around. Matrix had some company that day, and both dogs must have assumed I should also get involved in playing with them. 😉
Czas tych poprawek skutecznie wydłużały mi czworonogi. Matrix miał tego dnia towarzystwo, ale oba psiaki uznały, że mnie też trzeba wciągnąć do zabawy. 😉
