RE: Update
I'd rather attach the servo skull to guitar string than on spike...
RE: Update
I think your free hand is a little rough around the edges, maybe a spot or two of a few more layers might give it a smoother look or just touch up around the edges to neaten up the freehand work.
With your metallics i think you should take the highlighting up a couple more notches but only on some of the extreme edges, not all. Adding to this the antenna on the servo skull the paint or finish looks quite rough to me.
The lights (and gem- like features) the transition doesn't look smooth to me i think a few glazes ontop would really make them shine.
One last thing is if you look at the first picture you have rust on the yellow part just above the black area which you have been working on but there is no rust on the black area i think it would be a little more convincing if you added some extra rust on the black where other rust may touch upon.
Hope i wasn't too harsh on you dude
i really like the work you've been doing its good stuff.

RE: Update
neither bad nor good. well, it's well painted but somehow I am not too fond of the idea of attaching this skull to the rhino.
it is pretty small and looks just like a neglectible detail.

Is that a bad thing? It's not by any means the main focal point of the model but aren't the 'little' details part of what really make a model? Plus..., I figured the servo-skull tied in with the theme of the rhino. I could be wrong, but on the other hand it's not glued and it can be easily remove if it is distracting.well, it's well painted but somehow I am not too fond of the idea of attaching this skull to the rhino.

Wriath said the same thing. I'll tidy it up using black/white and then a few more glazes to tie it together.

I used mithral silver for the final highlight but I can still add a little white to brighten it if it is needed. With your metallics i think you should take the highlighting up a couple more notches but only on some of the extreme edges, not all. You're right. But this is one of the areas not done yet. I'll finish that when I work on the freehand that is going in that spot. One last thing is if you look at the first picture you have rust on the yellow part just above the black area which you have been working on but there is no rust on the black area i think it would be a little more convincing if you added some extra rust on the black where other rust may touch upon.
Never. The input that is offered here is fantastic!Hope i wasn't too harsh on you dude Smile i really like the work you've been doing its good stuff.
??Would that help??I'd rather attach the servo skull to guitar string than on spike...

I quickly sketched out what I was going to do on the top of the rhino. Before I drew it on the model I thought; "That would be stupid~! Why go through all that work and then post it and find out it won't fit the theme of the project? Why not post it first??" SO..., here is what I was planning (now with the plasma pistol instead of the six-shooter) The paint should be in the same colour range as the skulls on the hatch.

Please keep in mind that this is just a concept sketch..., However, I am interested in what you think??

no, just not quite fitting IMHO. but remember - it's just my opinion and it's your model.damnedfist wrote:Is that a bad thing?
well, this would allow to make the connection feel less material, so that the skull would look like hovering, flying, or whatever. if the string is thin and not too soft it can ba a good way to attach the skull. but it was only a suggestion probably.damnedfist wrote:??Would that help??I'd rather attach the servo skull to guitar string than on spike...
If you want to paint a rhino with a big freehand - finedamnedfist wrote:However, I am interested in what you think??
If you want to paint a logo on a vehicle - fine
if you want to paint a huge cowboy on an Abrams tank - doesn't fit
if you want to paint a huge cowboy on a truck - fine
so why should a huge cowboy fit a rhino?
well, it may look nice and it is your vehicle. i wouldn't paint a cowboy on my rhino, as it doesn't fit my vision of 40k.
if it's for your own use - then fine, use it and I believe you will make it look great.
on the other hand if you want to enter it into any GD-like contest, beware of purists! Just check the discussions on ozpainters forum about Szary's GD-winning harlequins. Some wondered how could they win and not get disqualified as they are not 40K harlequin's but Batman's enemies.
It's just a friendly warning, and make of it any use you want
The sketch looks nice and promising, maybe except for the jaw which seems to be a bit shifted to a side...

I had to think this over for a few days. I've had this idea for some time and I was really motivated to execute it on this project. But, if I am considering entering this at Games Day this year then your advise is too valuable to ignore. So, now I think that I will put this project on hold for a little while so that I can decide what I am going to do with it.if it's for your own use - then fine, use it and I believe you will make it look great.

I am more than open to ideas that anyone has as I look for inspiration on how to complete this.
I would hate to see it disqualified...
Just check this thread out:
Just check this thread out:
I like the concept and the execution is great but considering things from a GW-universe perspective, it really should have been DQed as people have said.
I think it would have been better if they left the more *obvious* batman references out to avoid any direct DQ...
and I've heard and read more of such..That is kind of surprising that the Harlie squad didn't get DQ'ed

THis is just an idea and should be taken as such. Skulls do form a good portion of the iconography of the 40K universe and this is an Imprial Fists vehicle? Why not a regular skull (or one with a com unit) with a black SM fist punching/tearing the hole and a yellow SM fist holding the plasma pistol. I think that would tie to the Imperial Fists scheme while still being original enouggh to catch the eye of the judges and give you something of your original idea.
This is just a spur of the moment idea without that much thought into it, so take it as such. The you and the others are welcome to shoot holes in the idea if it does not work.

Mahon, while I generally agree with you it's a risky idea, we shouldn't forget you've quoted 'standard' community members, not judges.
remember, even our GW judges said nothing about Szary's unit, what's more - they liked it and suggested it shoud win. and for me these guys were ultra-sensitive regarding GW universe.
now, back to the drawing - why don't we call this guy the undead inquisitor, not a cowboy? there are some inq models looking like cowboys in fact - long trenches, hats, weapons...
EDIT: I'd perhaps just replace scarf on his neck with something more 40k-ish. Inquisitor's =I= sign on a chain maybe?
