I've received mixed reviews so far on this project from those that have seen it. (Myself included)
The idea was to have a rhino with a 'acceptable' level of weathering as a base for the freehand that I planned on doing over it. I wanted to give the feel that it was in the midst of the battle in a hostile environment. Here was the test piece;
I liked the result. But when I started to apply the idea to the rhino, however, I really was not so sure anymore. I kind of gave up on it until I showed it to the staff at our local GW and the gamers that were there. They seemed to rather like the effect and thought that I should continue with it.
This is what I had completed so far. The painting is far from finished but you can get the feel of what the metal will look like.
He was getting flak on the water drop . At heresy we said they looked to big but they look great as rust under the paint effect. Overall Damned awesome work man, great effects on yellow!
I like the overall look of the tank but my only criticism (*don't pay too much attention to it*) is that there's a bit too much 'bubbling', while the effect is great there should only be small areas of 'bubbling' in places that theoretically get wet from underneath like the track covers and plate edges etc.
Getting back into the thick (or rather thin as in thinning my paints) of it, not picked up a brush in some time so this may hurt a bit until I get used to the feel of them again
It looks really good to me, and like Djinn said on heresy it was the bubbling putting people off, im still in 2 minds about the bubbling effect, but i think you're progressing quicker on the weathering side of things then i am. Great job dude.
Thanks for all the encouragement! It has definitely motivated me to continue on in this project. (It has been sitting on my desk for weeks with no progress) I'm now excited again to work on this. Ill be sure to keep you posted and look for some C&C along the way.

Alright..., here is a quick update then. Here I have the metal almost completed. The 'bubble' effect is done and some of the weathering is finished. I also spent some time on the zenithal lighting to prepare for the details and the freehand.
I have to plot out the freehand next and I also have to start thinking about what I am going to do with the tracks. I think that mud is the way to go but I'll have to try a couple of recipes first to get it right.
