well, I think skeletal cowboys work better on big trucks than on APCs.
It may seem somewhat unorthodox but it does fit the theme of my army. I play Imperial Fist/ Legion of the damned mix. I have flames and skulls on everything. But this does bring a question to mined. If this project works out the way that I am hoping I would like to enter it into the GD in the 40k vehicle category..., Will this unorthodox 'paint job' hurt it in the judging do you think?? :?

It'd have to be a very hard nosed judge to not be impressed
Getting back into the thick (or rather thin as in thinning my paints) of it, not picked up a brush in some time so this may hurt a bit until I get used to the feel of them again

Try working with him . Sorry Fist, I just couldn't resist lol.

To add a bit to what Fist was saying here, the skeletal cowboy would fit the theme of the rest of his army perfectly, having seen it for myself. Not sure about how that would go over in a GD so I will leave that up to you guys to answer but as far as fitting the theme goes, it is absolutely perfect.

While I think the cowboys from hell would look cool as hell. I've always been told that they often judge based upon the appropriateness of it in the 40k universe. Then again you think you should go with what ever gives you the strongest confidence with. Then again I don't do the Golden Daemons so please take it with a grain of salt.
If it wasn't for the gutter my mind would be homeless.

it depends on how many Mahons and Nameless's you will have among judges
generally speaking, GD entry should fit GW universe. skeleton cowboy - while it is not the most recognizable element of their sf universe - should not cause any problems. mixing colour schemes of two existing chapter might make the judges say: "hey, it's not right". This is even more valid as one of these chapters is a very special and recognizable one.
now, I'm basing on my own opinion and thoughts, mind you. Judges of your GD might strongly disagree with me. Furthermore, I really cannot see anything specific to reply to you regarding your entry without seeing it finished first. It all depends on how much adding non-40k elements or mixing 2 well known official colour schemes affects the final effect.

to me it's more important that entries look good, capture something interesting: a moment, mood, character...

to many judges - more involved in GW universe and hobby - it may be too much to accept.

*Sigh* I originally thought; "heh! why don't I have him (the skeletal cowboy) holding a plasma pistol instead of a six-shooter" But then I dismissed this idea because I thought that it would take away from the 'western' look I wanted. Now, after reading your comments I am revisiting this idea. My only problem now is that I got a little zealous last night and sketched most of the freehand on already. Back to the drawing board (literally!)

I did consider this before starting this project. I think that what I have planned will be separate enough if this is a stand alone model in the competition yet still fit into army nicely when combined with them.

Update

Just a couple of WIP pics that show the hatch complete as well as the servo-skull. In the back ground you can see the original 'cowboy that I sketched on.., but now will be erased and redrawn to have him holding the plasma pistol.
