hey hey, welcome to the boards :)

When I try freehands I do it like this: Draw the freehand design a couple of times on a piece of paper first. Then use a very diluted paint to build up the freehand on the area that you want it. Use a small brush with a good point. And keep the color of the underlaying surface nearby to correct any mistakes :)

Don't forget to take your time :) Hope it helps.

Funny double post  :D .

It depends on what your are doing but sometimes its better to start with a black silhouette first!
uhm yeah keep your paint nice and wet, and practice is probably the best advice!

I read somewhere a good tip (didn't try yet personally): Varnish the surface where you want to paint the freehand first, this way you'll have a protective layer on it. Paint the freehand on the varnished surface, so using some brush soap you'll be able to remove failed tries without harming the painting below :).

that's what i sometimes do several times during painting - to protect what i've done in case i wanted to remove my later mistakes.

There's a tutorial over at the Brush Thralls' site about painting symbols. It's for WM symbols, but the basic techniques of how to get shapes to come out might help you with some simpler things.
