thank you! that's actually really helpful. I guess I didn't really look closely at the extremes they were using in that image. For highlighting, I guess the same rule applies. Go a little more exaggerated on the edges than you might think you would.

wish I had a drill to put holes in his hair dryer... anyway, thank you. That's great advice.

one of the best exercises is:
go for extremes, then return to your normal style of painting and you will notice it's much bolder than before.

read a bit more about it here

It can be applied to many things: darklining, highlighting, contrasts, color variation, etc.
Whenever people suggest you to be bolder with it.

For example when practising contrasts, paint a mini going from pure black to pure white. Then return to your normal style, but it will be bolder than before the experiment.

Okay, need some advice on this... the GW painting expert said "Dry brush them" for the wings... but that's not what I want. So, recommendations on the wings.

I know the mask is messy, but that's where I was working really hard to figure out how to get the effect I wanted so it's a lot of paint in that area. Hopefully the next 4 will look smooth but with the same effect.

Anyway, wings. What is the best way to get them to look right? i.e. pull out the detail, reinforce the black-teal gradient, and perhaps not make them look quite as shiny as they do right now.

nice ships and water bases. I would only suggest to pull highlights further - even to pure white.
wavy water is pretty reflective, so it can become white when it reflects sun.

the ghosts ship would also look better if highlighed more - more ghostly.

Good feedback. The request was that the ships should look a lot like the box. I agree, the highlighting could be stronger to achieve that - the ghost ship wasn't quite as "white" as the box - I also didn't go as pink for the skaven ship, so the pallid grey flesh looked like I wanted, but there isn't much differentiation between the skin and the bone, which is a bit of a shame - but overall I think the goal is being attained, which is that when the guy (not a gamer and definitely not a painter) opens the box for his christmas present he will be able to play that day with 10 ships that strongly resemble the box art. It's also a bit of a time issue lol - I am stopping about 3 steps short of where I want to. 6 more ships left :|

Some more ships... a couple of poor images. As always, retroactive feedback appreciated.

Pharaoh Ship

A Slightly blurred >< ... kraken

I am sure there are many many things that can be done differently on a ship like this, but the requirement was that it look like the box as best as I could do with the limited time, so that's what I went for. So I guess, feedback on this would be... if you had no time constraint and the desire to do this "your" way... what would you do differently?

Dwarf ship

Much like the kraken, I didn't have much flexibility so what would you do differently and how could I have executed this better?

Heldenhammer (blurred... AGAIN!)

This ship had ALL sorts of issues. The first is... lack of time! So a few explanations...

The ship came to me constructed! This was a bit of a problem for the middle sails... I simply could NOT paint them with any reasonable accuracy. Therefore, I used a dark outline on the middle sail to hide some of the issues. Extrapolating that out, I had to dark outline everything. I am not yet very good with the brush at painting a super clean black line - so.. yeah... not ideal.

Also, with such little time (I got this ship the Thursday before Christmas) the actual ship is supposed to have yellow designs on the sails. Yellow, as you probably know, is generally annoying and requires many layers to make it look great. So with the client's permission, we went for gold so as to speed up the process.

I consider all my work WIP even though the models are painted and delivered. So all feedback is appreciated and used for future projects!
