very pale with some blood splatters to make some contrast on this generally monochrome mini?

Pale what? green? fleshtone?....
I usually paint blood splatter quite brown-ish but you're right it might be an eye catcher to use blood red blood here...

pale green (there was a 'rotting flesh' color or something like this) shaded with browns.
PS - I also couldn't notice the corpse at first..

The base looks good, but the skulls are too white, especially when they are lying in such a dirty environment.
Mini looks very nice too. My favourite part must be the skin around the chest area. Very good contrast there. I'm not totally convinced by the nmm though. It either needs some more 'pop' or perhaps some weathering of some kind, conform with the base.
