Primer Problems

I've been having some trouble with my Army Painter White primer lately. It's been producing a grainy surface on my models that I can't seem to avoid. I've noticed it before but not to the extent I'm seeing it now. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I think it would be a good idea for me to try another primer. I'm considering 3 options:
Return to GW undercoats: I stopped using these because I believed that the army painter produced a more matte finish. How do people feel about citadel undercoat performance? What about the new brush on primer?
Car primer - I used this before and did not like the result. The undercoat was far too thick and took too long to dry. But I have done some research and believe dupli-color is a brand that might fit my needs.
Vallejo Model Air grey primer - I have no experience with this but thought it might be a good idea to try it. I wouldn't be able to get it for some time, however.
Any advice would be really helpful. Priming a model is the most stressful part of painting it for me, as many hours work getting it ready could be undone in just a few poor sprays. I'd really like to be able to master this.
