Primer Problems

Post by huitzilopochtli »

I've been having some trouble with my Army Painter White primer lately. It's been producing a grainy surface on my models that I can't seem to avoid. I've noticed it before but not to the extent I'm seeing it now. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I think it would be a good idea for me to try another primer. I'm considering 3 options:

Return to GW undercoats: I stopped using these because I believed that the army painter produced a more matte finish. How do people feel about citadel undercoat performance? What about the new brush on primer?

Car primer - I used this before and did not like the result. The undercoat was far too thick and took too long to dry. But I have done some research and believe dupli-color is a brand that might fit my needs.

Vallejo Model Air grey primer - I have no experience with this but thought it might be a good idea to try it. I wouldn't be able to get it for some time, however.

Any advice would be really helpful. Priming a model is the most stressful part of painting it for me, as many hours work getting it ready could be undone in just a few poor sprays. I'd really like to be able to master this.

I had the same problem with Army Painter black primer. After various well-primed miniatures, suddenly it had begun to create that grainy surface (particularly on a Chaos Commander, obviously intended to have a chaotic but smooth armor... Very disappointing...). These alterations can be determind even by the ambient-temperature; anyway I returned to GW black primer (even if I had similar problems also with that one, but now it seems to work properly), but since these things happen I really increased very much the shaking-time before priming...

Can't really say anything about Army Painter or the other primers but I have been using GW since the very beginning and never really had problems. I remember once during winter when I went outside to prime a model that I had problems (it turned out grainy and was pretty much useless). Other than that no problems at all with the GW primers (but I'm almost only using the white primer).

Did you wash the mini from at before priming it? Maybe the surface wasn't right? Did you shake the can before useing it? Maybe tje can was standing to long? There are many different possibilities.
Or you just had bad luck with this one ;)
I use GW and Tamiya
miniatures painted:
2011 - 83, 2012 - 38, 2013 - 45, 2014 - 56, 2015 - 95, 2016 - 106, 2017 - 22

The paint is drying before reaching the miniature AP always does that they arent that good.
Check and clean the nose also but in my experience with AP i would change primer to GW or tamiya
