Forces
Alliances are a relic of history, formed - if at all - briefly and superficially for common gain and sundered just as quickly. The United Nations, European Union, NATO, African Union...all have long been consigned to the dust bin of history.
There are still dominant nations and corporations, but on the far-flung battlefields of 2259 the realities of space travel and the limitations of interstellar supply lines can bring even the most powerful national militaries to defeat at the hands of desperate rebels or native aliens rising against their colonial oppressors.
At the same time, the ever-present menace of Bug infestations can wipe out a human settlement at a moment's notice, the artificial intelligence of the Watch keep humanity's worst extremes of destruction in check, and the vastness of even the small bit of space that humans have explored still offers up daily mysteries.
