Jedi Kids

Post by CreganTur »

For my next competition project, I'm preparing some of the "pirate" kids from Hasslefree. The first thing I did after receiving them was chop off the blades and add some cylindrical plasticard to create the lightsaber blades. Once I got that done they started to look much better.

My plan is to do individual diorama scenes with each of the kids facing off against some of Hasslefree's Grymm- their space dwarfs. I used my lifecolor flesh set for their skin and I really feel like i'm starting to get the hang of using it- still need to work out a few kinks, though.

For the first kid, I decided to go with the dark jedi look. My favorite part of painting him was his face- getting to play around with the shadows from the cowl was a lot of fun. I painted the stripes on his shirt to match one of the character models from the Jedi Academy game.

I did a lot of things differently with this girl, and I think it turned out well. For one, I based her outer robe with VMC Deck Tan and then gave it a couple of washes with Ogryn Flesh to establish the shading. Then I built back in the whites, going from Deck Tan to Silvergrey to pure white. Once that was done I mixed up some Deck Tan and Ogryn Flesh so I could smooth out some of the shadow transitions.

Her inner robe took a lot of though before I came up with that color scheme. I wanted to do something different and finally settled on that. Her hair, though, i my favorite part of this mini- it's the first time i've ever gotten shiny hair to look good.

This last kid is going to be jumping off of a catwalk onto 2 unsuspecting soldiers below- can't wait to model out that scene!

Looks like you are off to a good start :) The dark Jedi is my favorite. Great work on the shirt.

I suggest adding more highlights to the lighsabers to really make them glow. I would go all the way to white.

The right eye on the girl looks a little odd. It might be just the angle of the picture, but it looks notably bigger than the left eye.

The two different colored blades on the jumping kid ... it is probably just my personal preference, but I would make both blades the same color creating a more symmetric (harmonic?) appearance and providing a nice frame for the kid himself.

Looking forward to your next steps :)

I know how much pain can painting these small faces be. Yours are not perfect, but it's easy to se you got what it takes to paint them well. With a little practice you will be albe to make them really cool.

Yeah, two different blades make him look as if he was playing with toy swords.
The girl - cool one!
The dark one - don't you want to darken his cloak a bit?

I would agree with previous posters, the different coloured blades is really distracting. I would also highlight the blades up to almost white, and if your up to the challenge, do som source-light from the blades onto the models themselves. I think it would really raise the quality of a piece like this.
