Serraphim's W.I.P

Post by Serraphim »

My main goal with this work in progress thread is to get better at painting, and having the best painters in the world c&c my work will help me achieve that. I recently got rid of my cable so I've been spending most of my free time painting after about a year of nothing.

Also please forgive the camera shots as I only have the camera on my DROID for now.

I was trying for a NMM look to the armor parts on the red and I know that I need to push the shading and highlighting further, but my main concern is that I dont think my blends are anywhere near as smooth as they should be. The red was:

3rd highlight - 75/25 vmc white/vmc yellow ochre
2nd highlight - Dwarf Flesh
1st highlight - 50/50 Blood Red/Dwarf Flesh
Base - Blood Red
1st Shadow - 50/50 Blood Red/Dark Flesh
2nd Shadow - was alternating between reaper royal purple and vmc brown violet

wow you make things harder ..

in the future
start with 2 highlight as a base (not exacly Yellow ohra + white .. rather Red + pink / orange / ochra )
then create shadows end mid tones by darking colors so on this awfuly pinkis surface aplay wash of Blod Red , = mid tones very bright end sparkly
then appay again but on parts that should be darker end so on as you get to realy dark almoust black "juice"
wichmey go with transision by purples , greens , whatever as it works

but starting from your desided Blod Red creating highlights then darking thngs will make you to loos mid tones end finish with re highlightning end doing same things again

but for now
Blood Red + purple + black - end make it rely thined - end applay in shadows - mainding in mind that pigment will sethe at the end of brush strokeas - so pus "dark" to shadow

that's one neat paintjob!
but you still need bolder contrasts - I would suggest to focus on contrasts now instead of smoothness, and then try to improve smoothness with a few glazes.

When I was first learning to paint like this I was taught not to use black as it desaturates the model, or is this something that I can ignore now?

Now I wish I painted some yesterday instead of putting together my sang guard, but I guess that's what Sundays are for

So I was able to do a little more work on the Human yesterday. I know I need to work on the contrast but I'm lacking dark browns for the red, so I decided to try my hand at the black. Its 2/1 Chaos Black/Brown Violet, mixing in Bleached Bone for the highlight. I also noticed that I completely f'd up any sort of NMM so I'm just going to leave the armour as is and try NMM on the metal parts (buckle, spikes and such). C&C is highly appreciated.

Thanks. Once I've got the way the colors work sorted in my head I'll be able to batch paint the rest of the team (although I do still need an Ogre).

So I worked a little more on the team last night, 3 of the linemen. It took a while to get a good base coat on the red, but when I did the first layer of shadow I noticed that when it dries its not a smooth cover, there appears to be little dots of the shadow color. Is this due to pips in the metal surface? Is this what the "milliput milk" is for? I tried taking a photo but I only have the camera on my phone for right now.

EDIT: After going through many threads on here, I think my biggest issue with the Blood Bowl team is that I didnt spend enough time prepping the minis. I'm just gonna keep plugging away at the team, and maybe revisit them in a year or so.

My LGS is doing a 500 pt 40K tourney next month, so the Human team is on hold (plus i need to find somewhere in Vegas that sells milliput). For the tourney I'm doing my angels sanguine, and I've started on the SG.
