Midge's Showcase

Post by Midge913 »

Being new to the forum I thought that I would post up some completed projects that I have finished over the last couple of months. Some of these things are personal projects for my own armies and some of them are commission pieces. I have heard great things about your community here and I would love some comments and critiques from the learned members of this forum. So onto the picures:

First we have a unit of Flamers of Tzeentch that I just finished last night for my own Daemons army:

Next some shots of a Dark Elf Beastmaster on a Manticore that I did on commission:

A Dwarf Lord on a War Bear from Scibor Miniatures for my Dwarf army. He is a counts-as for Thorgrim on the Throne of Power:

A Tyranid Prime. I did the conversion myself out of bits and pieces of old Ravenor and Lictor kits with a bit of GS and Plasticard:

these miniatures show a good mix of various well-done's and and things to be improved.

I can see your painting is pretty good now, thanks for posting these pics.

now when you're painting a mini, you have to choose what will make it look interesting.
will it be the colors (eg. on the tyranid model - colors are bold and well contrasted, so the model stands out), blod shading and highlighting (dwarf champion's beard, slayer lord's hair).

on the flamers you managed to make them interesting thanks to bold colors with strong accent/focus on the fire
on the slayer you used some bold and contrasting colors plus strong shading
on the champion the beard looks cool, the cape would look great as well (nice contrasted chiaroscuro there) if it was smoother
the tyranid stands out thanks to the color scheme even if your painting is flat there

the worst two paintjobs (not technically but visually) are the manticore and the armored bear.
the manticore looks flat and rubbery. you didn't manage to emphasize the 3-dimensional character of the sculpt with highlights and shadows and it looks like a rubber toy.
the bear is almost all covered with armor, and you also failed to create any focus there, to divide the armor into parts, to sculpt it with light...
both these models have huge monotoneous surfaces (manticore's skin, bear's armor) which look boring and uninspired.

you managed to get it right on the other models, so you shouldknow how to deal with it. don't you?

first of all, welcome to the forum :)
Mahon already gave you a bunch of remarks, not much to add from myself really.
you sure know how to paint good pieces for gaming. now, the question is if you're satisfied with this or you want go further to showcase painting?
