Gouache?

Post by Midnight Lurker »

Hi Guys!

Has anyone ever had success working with gouache on a mini? I have some and have been playing around with it. I really like the POW of this one... I mean this stuff is really white! It's almost like a highlight color for white. My only bummer is that I'm having trouble getting a smooth layer. Is it just a matter of thinning it more and making lots of layers?

And before anyone warns me... yes. I know that it is opaque and not transparent. That is actually why I bought it. I wanted something that would give me a sharper stronger highlight in tiny details like the reflections in eyes, things like that. I'm just struggling to find the balance between too thick (surface texture) and too thin (needs multiple layers for true solid coverage)

Isn't that watercolour paint, how does it react with acrylic?
Getting back into the thick (or rather thin as in thinning my paints) of it, not picked up a brush in some time so this may hurt a bit until I get used to the feel of them again

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a watercolor or not, but it is labeled as an "acrylic polymer", and you're supposed to thin it with water. So that's what I've been doing. It seems to stick to my regular paints just fine, but I haven't tried actually mixing it with any other colors. I've used it as a super highlight on top of the white highlight. It definitely makes things pop a lot higher. It's such a significant jump that I need to go back and glaze the transitions several times to blend it into the titanium white!

What I don't understand is why it leaves surface texture when it dries, and how to fix that. Some folks have told me that it's made with chalk, which would explain the powdery lumpy texture. Should I be adding a medium to this? I'm thinking maybe some flow improver. So far I've only been using water....

I have used gouches back in my school days, and used it to paint postcards but i moved to acrylics.

Gouaches always leave a grainy look even if you do thin layers or use any kind of other product with it, what brand are you using? does your paints come with a thin oily coat?

The cheaper the product the chalky it gets, i used to buy from windsor and newton and they werent that bad.

Has for a "whiter shade of white" (i liked the sound of this one  ) try to use "off white" its a little brighter then normal white.

All paints are useble with each other, the only problem is that some dont like to be in top of others, oil only go on top of acrylic not the other way around.

Hope this helped

yeah, if only my knowledge is true gouache is and should be a bit chalky/grainy. that's the way it is... and that's one of the properties that make people choose it for painting - some want to use this effect to their advantage.

and I am really surprised that you're suggesting "off white" as whiter than normal white, Panda. in my experience "off white" tended not to be as white as regular white. it was like "almost white" and left some room for further highlighting with pure white.

but you may be right and I may be wrong..

PS - oh sh*t, Jen, I forgot to return to the answer to your PM (the one you sent me long ago). I started writing a longish answer, wanted to save it but it didn't save, i got annoyed and left it for later, and only now I recalled I never sent you a proper answer. sorry! do you still need it?

I know in oils Titanium White is as white as they come but that doesn't mix well either

Yep, Titanium White is probably the whitest white from the manufacturer in question...

Thanks you guys!

Yeah Panda, if you can remember the name of the uber white you're thinking of I would love to hear about it!

I don't seem to be having any problems getting this gouache to stick to other paints (I have a mix of RMS GW and VMC), and other paints seem to stick to it just fine too. No oily issues. It's just chalky. But if that is just the nature of the beast I can deal with it. I'll just have to be very careful in my applications.

For the record, these are the specific products I'm using:

Titanium white: https://www.dickblick.com/products/liqui ... tt-colors/

Luminous White (labeled as a fluorescent): https://www.aswexpress.com/discount-art- ... tubes.html

The gouache really is noticeably brighter... perhaps I have the wrong titanium white?

PS: Mahon-- Yep, I could still use that info if you have any thoughts. Santa Claus was asking me a few weeks ago if you had ever gotten back to me. But if it's causing you annoyance feel free to let it go. Get to it whenever you have time.
