Internet Relay Chat afaik. through various clients you can connect to a server and...chat.

And if you guys/gals want to use a cool program to access the servers and the channel created, I can give you some help with IceChat. There are also other programs out there like mIRC and others.

I'm using Trillian to handle all my Instant Messaging accounts including IRC. Can't do as much as the other irc-only clients, but knows enough for me.
