Bugman - Limited Ed, WIP
Well time for the next project, my first dwarf (other than Gotrek) for a while and what a dwarf to do! Josef Bugman.
Now, once I cleaned the model and such I noticed a few things. The first being the barrels upon which he stands don't align correctly, this left big nasty cracks down the two outer sides of the barrels and on top the lids were very uneven. So to remedy this I had to GS these gaps. Now, I'm not very good with GS and this is probably my third or fourth time using it, but this was the biggest task I've used it for. And I surprised myself. As it turned out the lids needed more than gap filling and I had to level half of them out using GS, so a big job for me there.
The next thing was the base. It came with the standard monster base, but I didn't think having grass or rocks would look right. So - maybe against my better judgement - decided to make the base up out of flagstones. So once more the GS was used, I had a look at a base I know had these on and tried to copy this. I think it turned out ok, but I'll leave the judgement until the end after it's painted. But what do you all think?
And the final part I realised I had cut the tab on his foot off (notice the hole on top of one of the barrels? Secures him in place), so I did something else again. I got a spare 20mm base and drilled a hole in it and stuck a pin in Bugman's foot. So now he has two bases. One (the barrels) for display purposes and a second (flocked) for gaming use.
Anyways, this is the first post and the unpainted and un-undercoated version. I have a few pics just incase people haven't seen the model before, and again sorry for any blurry or out of focus pics.

RE: Bugman - Limited Ed, WIP
well, I'm going to track this topic till the very end... can you feel the pressure
:P
First comment: I think the space between the flagstones is a little big. I think it would look better if they were aligned closer together.
Now, get painting!!! Instead of showing us unpainted mini's

ToMaZ - I thought that too, but in fears of scrwing up the stones themselves I gave myself some space to work with. Otherwise I'd have ended up with some big mess.
He'll be undercoated tomorrow, to give the GS time to dry, and then painting starts. I have a full week, so expect pics sometime this week in not the end of it.

Well I started, and tbh I've moved at lightning speed. I tend to find painting dwarfs is quick; beard, armour, flesh, details - done. But I've taken my time, or as much as I could.
So what have I done...
The beard; I have a pic from the GW site which I'm using as a base and I decided to try and get my beard the same as that one. Not going to happen. Going from Scorched Brown - Bestial - Snakebite Leather - Bubonic - Bleached Bone; I kinda screwed up. It looked odd. So to resue it I gave it a brown wash (very watered) and then lightly drybrushed Bleached Bone. And to my surprise, it seems to have worked. It's not amazing but not bad.
I will point out I never really drybrushed the beard, this is my usual way of doing them. I decided to paint it on, trying to blend in from dark near the top to the blondeish colour. Didn't work but I must try harder with my dwarf beards in the future, drybrushing it too easy and borning how to do them.
Next I moved onto the Flesh. Going from a dark flesh base I blended right up to elf flesh, passing through; tanned and dwarf flesh on the way. This was a long way, I didn't touch dwarf flesh for at least five or six layers. And to finish it off I attempted a red, bulbos nose. Mixing a tiny amount of blood red into my final colour and applying it to the nose, seems to look ok but not perfect. Oh and he has eyes (but the brow covers them) and his teeth are done bleached bone washed with a mix of black and flesh inks.

Next up I moved onto the armour. Going from a Boltgun Metal base I washed it with a mix if brown and black ink (more empysis on the brown), then began to highlight way layers and mixed of Boltgun, Chainmail, Mithril silver. The final highlight, most noticeable on the axe edges, was mithril and a touch of skull white. I then gave the whole metal parts a wash of very watered down black ink.

And the final parts done today were the axe shaft, horns and the sleeves (he has two pairs of sleeves). Both started on a scorched brown base then a mix with beastial brown, followed by adding snakebite leather. Here was where the sleeves that go to the hands stopped. The other set went onto a mix (as above) but adding bubonic brown and a final highlight of bubonic.
The axe shaft and horns were more or less the same - scorched, beastial, snakebite. The horns moved onto bleached bone and it was then I realised I can't blend. As you'll see, they are actually brown at the bottom and cream at the top I just overbrushed slightly lower down to give the appearance of a smooth transition. The axe handle is plain. I can't do freehand and fear to screw up by trying to put grain down it, but I may try if good advise is given.
And the last pic...

Now, the cloak is a big part of this model. I was thinking of doing it a blue colour, this is beacuse Bugman's main colours has been blue for the past two editions of FB. But what to others think?
Also any comments welcome.

looks good. The beard looks very good. I agree with Skrit on the metallics. they looks too plain. A colour, more shading and also a bit of golden details would help. For example the Bugman symbol and the skull (??) on the axe painted in gold would break all the silver a bit.

I'll see what I can do about the metal. And as to the gold, I've not touched it yet. There is a pattern around the edge of the cloak and I plan to do that in gold to make it stand out from the base colour, which I'm thinking of doing in blue. The gold will be done then, that way I can do it all at once.
And I'll keep you updated, don't worry.
