I am liking it, but the rope seems a bit too clean in my eyes, and the barrel and bindings of the barrel are blending into each other a bit. Perhaps a touch of hihglight on the bindings or a touch more weathering on the barrel to help seoarate them a little better.

I like his unshaved face

I also like colour choice You've decided to use;
I don't know if it's because of photo but minis back doesn't look highlighted (or shaded) enough; imo on the pic mini's front looks much better; You could also make some drybrush job on bow and barrel and lay a watered-down wash on the ropes (now they look too "clean" compared to the rest of the model);
these are only technical advices - I am not a super-painter so don't treat them too serious

hi guys
thank you for the info, it is definately the light source for the picture, the model looks nothing like the picture at all, still, my old camera needs to many lights in order to 'see' the model.
my new digital camera should be here soon, the 35mm Minolta Dimage A200, then i'll get some better shots.
the banding on the barrel will be highlighted, and i will drybrush the bow too, many thanks.

I like it too, turned out really nice. The unshaved face is a good idea, maybe it could be a bit more well defined. If you don't say he is unshaved, I might haven't noticed it at all. Maybe it is just a picture and IRL it's clear.
The leather colors look good this way, maybe a bit smoother blending would make it even better. With the barrel it is true, that the wood and the metal parts have too similar colors. The highlight you are planning will solve this problem. I like the rope, but I would put more highlight on the trousers.

I noticed the unshaven look and liked it a lot. What I might suggest is adding some shading to the face (eg. under the nose, and between the cheeks and the nose) - even if only with washes.

yep. I think he got the leather looking right now, and blending is just a matter of practice. two more minis clad in leather, ten more minis, and it will be smooth - i believe

I have a similar feeling - that the back isn't as good as the front. generally it's the barrel blending with the rest of the mini. It could use some more highlighting. you could add several layers of drybrushing and then smooth it a bit with a glaze, or if you have time and patience - paint the woodgrain on it...
but hey - it seems you managed to improve the mini quite much

A lot has been said, some great improvements! I'd go a bit easier on the static grass though...

to be honest I like the barrel as it is. Though I agree the rope needs a bit of work. Very nice

ahh this mini is full of character

I really like the realistic feel you have given him. there are some things that could be improved imho and most of them have to do with contrast.
brown bow / brown clothes / reddish brown quiver / brown barrel = alot of brown packed together

I know this is inevitable if you go for a realistic feel but it is still something that I notice very quickly. I also don't know how you could fix it right away

maybe working with different colours for shading and highlighting could solve this. F.E. using greens and blues to shade and thus create different colour fields for each part.
same comment for the face actually. I really like the eyes and lips, and also the baby like skin

the yellow hair needs some blacklining to be separated from the pale tan though. A dark brown line could solve this very quickly. Also I'd expect abit of blush on this fatguy :p
your highlighting and shading techniques appear very solid. the quiver and robes are very nice and smooth. I know the wooden barrel is supposed to be rougher, after all it's wood, but still it doesn't look like the same painting level I can see on the robes. If you look at the way the natural light hits the barrel on the pictures, you could add some additional highlights on those parts?

do You mean adding blue / green to brown to get more "shadowy", darker tone? if so maybe You have any pics if Your minis where such mixture was used?
