Wow. I'm glad that works for Marike, but I couldn't pull it off. I got taught a whole different method/order for doing things. Hers turns out beautiful for her though! :)

wow! That's a lot crazier than the method Tanya just taught at the LGS. Marike might be able to pull that off, but I'm still sticking to working from the inside out. Eyes first, Tanya-style technique. ;-)

Nice tut, but I would never try it with the face already done. I'm messing up the eyes so often, I'ld need to redo it completely anyway.

I do the eyes first on a mini, so if/when I mess up it's no big problem to start over. I paint a big white area over the eyes. Then I put the color I want the iris to be down the eyes as a stripe/line. It doesn't matter if it gets on the skin area. Then I use a thin black or brown (usually water color) to cover all the white and other color around the eyes all the way up to the edge of the eyes. This cleans up the extra white and iris color. Then I go back with my flesh shade color and cover the black/brown but leave a little line at the edge of the eyes.

If I have lots of room with the eyes (Werner Klocke), then I might do a black stripe with the iris color inside that to have a line defining the iris. Also if I have a ton of space I can do the reflection dot or white, but I'm not as good as Marike and have a hard time getting it to come out right. Plus I paint a lot of models that I don't think are as well suited to having great eyes; the sculpts just don't let you do a lot there.

I love that her method gives more definition to the irises, but don't know if I like the idea of the black lining of the eyes being inside the eye space. It seems like it would make most eyes seem smaller than they are. But, then again, I've seen plenty of Marike's paint jobs up close, and she does beautiful eyes. I think it's just not completely a method for me.
