Hi from a new member, painting ?

Hello All,

I?m new to your site and I have to say that I love your site!! Keep up the great work!!

I just am getting back into 40k after a 6-7yr break, mostly due to the lack of time. Now things seem to be quitting down a bit so I?ve decided to start a new army for this fall ?07 season. I have a large Chaos army that I used back in the day but for some reason I?m drawn to the Dark Angles. I?ve always loved to use Terminators when ever possible and now with the new DA codex you can have a full Deathwing army. Which is just what the doctor ordered!!

So my question is what brand of paints should I invest in, being that I live in the USA? I use to use the GW paints, which seemed ok but would like to here your what you have to say as to the best paints to use. I really want to take my time on every mini to paint it to my best ability. I love the hobby more so than gaming so quality is more important to me than quantity.

Thanks

welcome aboard! hope You'll be having great fun here - just as most of us (I hope  )
as for the paints I use vallejo, gw, reaper and rackham brands - but mostly vallejo; every brand has some nice colors so I mix them :)

Hi there and welcome!
I hope you'll enjoy your stay here :)

As for painters, each of us has their own preferences. I like Vallejo, Reaper MSP, and even some Citadels (especially metallics). You'd better buy a few bottles from various ranges for testing and see which you like best. They are all really different so it's all about personal preferences...

I would recommend 'difficult' colors for testing - like some bright red, yellow, maybe light green?

Reaper MSP are getting really popular in US. And they even might be cheaper for you than Vallejo , as MSP are manufactured in your country :)
Welcome!

I second Slawek. I mostly use Vallejo and some GW paints, when it comes to metallics GW paints are usually the better choice. Since you can mix them freely, you could indeed buy a sample set from different products and test which colors you like.

Mostly GW here also but I also have paints from Vallejo, Tamiya and recently tried out some of the P3 paints which seem to work very nice as well. :)

Oh, and welcome of course!

I really like Vallejo and Reaper Master series. I have tried the Privateer press ones and found them to be quite nice overall. I still have a few GW paints that I refuse to part with - mostly metallics and Dwarf Flesh.
Stay Away from the reaper "propaint" line as some are very inconsistant and grainy. One of the really nice things about the reaper Master series is that they come in triads (shade midtone and highlight) which is a really brilliant thing if you are painting a whole army.

Hi!

Thank you for the warm welcomes and all of your advice. I will be making a trip to my local game store this weekend to pick up a mixed bag of paints. Like many of you have suggested too try a sample of each brand of paint until I find something I like.

A funny side note; I broke out my Chaos army just to get the juices flowing again and I notice that my eyes had trouble focusing on some of the fine detail, LOL. Looks like I might need to make a trip to my eye doctor.

Once again thanks for all the help, I?ll keep you posted on my progress and once I get my first mini done I?ll post it.

Best always

Ps...James I took a look at your site, very cool!!! I like how the windows open, nice job! Also nice painting job on your mini's!

LOL Thanks and Im glad you like it but I will actually be putting up an all new site the first week in march. It wont look quite as cool (still gonna be pretty slick though) but will be MUCH easier to update and maintain. Also I am having a friend who is a photogrpaher take even better pics of all my models - so my new site should be killer in no time.
