Skulls and burnishing and metals oh my....
Large Image
Ok, my third piece out of an army... I went through and dropped the metals on and burnished them a bit with a black dry brush. I am not so sure that I can say I fully enjoy the out come but it does kinda do the job I wanted. I only say this because after drying it darkened way more than I intended it to. I wanted a really old nasty look, and does this effect pull it off or are there any suggestions?
Second, skulls, I haven't had much luck with skulls in the past and given the look I am going for. What should I start with for a really old looking skull? I was thinking base in dark brown and work lighter and then I dunno. It's either that or try a bronzed skull?
Sorry for some of the images blurring, I seem to get half the piece in focus, this one just is seated funny on the stand.

RE: Skulls and burnishing and metals oh my....
for painting skulls easy I can recommend reaper's bone colors triad: 3 really nice colors for base color, shade and highlight
if You don't want to use reaper's paints - I can suggest ordinary painting: base brown, highlighted to bleached bone in final
and about drybrushing metallics with black - I don't think it's good idea: as for me I do it only for painting smoke around engines and vents

Yeah I agree, it's better to add inks and glazes than to drybrush black over the edges. Also you might want to thin your paints abit more and do another step in between the black to grey. Right now it's a bit of a rough transition between the colors...

The method I use for painting bone is as follows:
-Vallejo Game Color Cobra Leather (GW Snakebite Leather is an alternative to this) basecoat
-Vallejo Game Color Bone White (GW Bleached Bone) added to the base color for the layers until you're reaching pure Bone White.
-Glaze of Future Floor Finish/water mixture (1:4 ratio) and a bit of Cobra Leather.
-Highlight the extremities with Bone White again
-Hit the most extreme bits with Bone White + white.
Here's a good indication of the results:

Thin more you say, I have a mix on this guy of like 4 drops of paint to a tablespoon of water 6:1 about. If I thin it more I just have one question, how many layers on average are you putting on your pieces? I think that I had 5-6 layers of grey and then darkened with another 5-6 layers of a black, only because I wanted the look of build up muck and dust in the recesses.
I also had the hard reality as to why not to dry brush metallics.... they flaked and spread onto the black after I took a closer look today. It was a good idea at the time, now not so good, glazes will be how I'll try it for the repair. If I leave it though I could just say it's mineral dust built up on the armor, but I'd think gold wouldn't be the color I would want. Maybe a silver would work but not gold.
Edit, the black to grey in the first two images is a horrid transition, this was before I started to blend them. Did you mean these two pics Skrit, or the latter pics? I am not sure the transitions came out very well given the pictures and blur. After the dry brushing you can hardly see any grey anymore.

thin Your paints as much as You like work with whem - if You don't feel confident with painting using "juice" - add only a bit water at the beginningRhynox wrote:Thin more you say, I have a mix on this guy of like 4 drops of paint to a tablespoon of water 6:1 about. as for me I don't paint more than 10 layers on average model but I must confess I've never counted...

@Skrit; It's possible that you need to be a member to view the pic. I'll try uploading it at Photobucket and reposting a new link.

This is one of the models from my Aurora Chapter army (a now ten year ongoing project... lol). The look I aim for with my models may be a bit cleaner than some people prefer for theirs, but it makes me happy, and I'm probably my own worst critic.
