Dry pastels - popular for models, but how about minis

Hi!
First of all this is my first post onto this forum, so I would like to greet all the people around.
Right now I'm finishing my tests for different techniques in order to paint my new Space Marine Ravenwing army. The idea is to paint them in a U.S. Army dessert pattern much like the forces stationed in Iraq. I tried to use dry pastels to apply a dusted, sanded look but I don't feel quite satisfied with the outcome. I would appreciate some comment as to which version is better: with, or without pastels.
Oh! And please - don't look at the model. I know it looks bad (fitting of parts etc.), but this is just a test subject for different techniques.

I must also admit, that I need to learn how to make better photos. Those look terrible.

Definitely stick to these pastels! They make the model look more interesting and realistic. Even if the model could use more highlighting and (especially) shading, you did a very good job with the pastels.

Welcome and feel at home here I don't really see why you consider your photos bad. They're really good IMHO.

Hueh. That's the tricky thing as I mentioned with photos. The modell actually has highlights, but they seem to be lost under three layers of varnish (due to decal aplication), and photo taking process (they actually are visible on the model). Guess they will have to be done in white the next time.

As for shading I wanted this to look realistic, which also means less work and faster painting schedule .

The colours work but I definitly miss depth/highlights. I also suggest that you make the borders of the base a bit darker to let the mini stand out more. Maybe Graveyard Earth or Bubonic Brown...

I use pastels only for bases. And then only every once in a while. I find the use of them a bit too 'sloppy' for on most minis, but when applied carefully it's great for dusting up the tracks of a tank or wheels or the lower ends of a cape and boots.
But it depends from pastel to pastel. you have some with bigger grains (the one I use) or the dust like pastels etc.

Anyway, as the rest said, stick with the pastels The mini looks fine btw, but define the armour plates more by lining them in with a darker brown.
