Following dioramas were made by my friend. He uses roots for such things - no particular plant.

you can see, that his chaos trees are quite similar to branches you are looking for.

I just found information about one of plants he used - roots of a raspberry.

take a walk in a park or something, if there are small bushes. You have a big chance to find little twigs on low growing bushes. That's what I did anyway
