One I've heard of, seen, and used is:
- take some PVA glue
- mix it with some baking soda or VERY fine sand (to add some rough texture)
- add brown paint or pigments
if you want it to be a bit shiny, like fresh mud - add a little water effect
you can see it on Ana's nurgle bases I think. can't recall where I used it, but I surely did.

desperate need of help
O.k...,
I hate posting w.i.p. pics when I am in the middle of something like this. BUT!, I really need help. (Especially from those who excel at NMM) I've worked up to the metal tears around the Inquisitor but I can't seem to get them right. I wasn't sure how I was going to do these tears so I printed out several copies of this picture to try a it few times and I must say it looked horrid each time! Please..., I would really appreciate any direction you can offer. :pray:
