A question about blacklining..

Post by tahrikmili »

Back when GW used to produce inks I would use Black Ink for blacklining my Blood Angels.

Now black ink is out of production. I suppose any black fountain ink would be a fine replacement, and I have a couple of pots of the GW ink to use still.. but now that I have the Badab Black wash as well, I was wondering what would be a better idea to blackline with? Watered down Chaos Black? Black Ink? Badab Black Wash?

I just painted the base red, gave it a layer of Baal Red, highlighted with Blood Red and I want to do the blacklining before I do any further highlights.. So please help me :)

I think GW washes might be too thin/transparant to blackline with although I must admit I haven't tried to blackline with them before. Watered down chaos black (to the consistency of ink) would work just fine too, I did that a couple of times already.

I haven't used GW paints for some time so it's difficult for me to talk about the paints you mentioned. But I think that on red surfaces Vallejo Inks should be good enough for blacklining.

Actually when i blackline alot of my things i use watered down brown ink and build it up until im happy with it. I find black actually very unnatural.

Thanks for all the replies! An attempt at blacklining with Badan Black Wash did not work at all. As you advised it was too thin to actually leave enough pigment. I then tried with watered down black acrylics (Plaid FolkArt Pure Black) and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It looks much more natural and matte compared to Black Ink which looks sort of odd with its glossy finish in the recesses. In hindsight, as you also advised, mixing in a bit of brown could have made it look more natural but I like how red and black contrast. I can post comparison photos of how it turned out next to how it looked with inks if anyone wants to see.

I will also look into these Vallejo inks mentioned. Do they have a glossy finish like the Citadel Inks used to?

Thanks!
