I was about 16 when I painted my first mini (I still have it, but washed off several times :D)

And their fluff is great - but I've heard about the same what you said - that they are very difficult army to play for beginers.
they are very difficult to play if You field "pure" dh army, but combined with allies - they are nasty 8)

I was almost 19 when I painted my first mini.... *aaaaah the good old days :P:P*

And I think that you just need to go with the army you like the best. DH in this case. No matter if they are difficult to play with... that's just my opinion :D

But its sometimes hard to beginner to lost always, not because of the skill or luck but because of army choice.
Demi it will be hard for our new friend to combine GK with allies. SM are prohibited and that leave for him only guard or sisters. Not a good possibility when we know that his next army will be Dark angels. I was played a Demonhunters but most of the time radical ones. In this case I can only suggest you:
- buy calidius assasin or/and 3 death cult assaisn models,
- do not buy any incinerator equiped GK models,
- You need lot of psycanons
- Thunderhamers equiped termies are your friends
- GK dreadnaught will be your friend (stay on maximum range and they are really hard to see by your opponent)
- massed deepstripe could work (sometimes) for you (against guard)
- lots of terrain is your friend

Buy 10 stormtroopers equip them with some plasmaguns and you will have reliable troops choice. Two such squads (5 guys with 2 plasma) cost only 140 pts. Hide them behind some terrain and wait as your deep strike arrive. Then pop up and shoot some bad guys or stay hidden to take some quarters in cleanse type mission.

Conclusion: DH are a great army to take allies from, but in a pure GK version are one of a most difficult one. But if you learn how to win with such army you will be treated with lots of respect

But DH doesn't necassarily mean GK. You don't have to play GK only...

Thanks for advices, I played several times GK vs. DiaCon's Space Wolfs, and I have to say that GK terminators are great - but they are too expensive.
I will see which army I play, but now I want to get my High Elves army to 3000 points (I have already army for 2000p. or more if I take a dragon).

Yes Mahon but from his schoping and choice of DA as a second army I think Galharen is SM oriented. In that case his choices are limited...
