OLD Polish Zlotych? Really!?!?

Post by HorusReborn »

so to all my polish friends I have a question about money!!! Back in the early 90's a friend of mine who was from Poland gave me some Zlotych. Cool I thought. I've kept them only to be told by another Pol that it's worth about 400 dollars US (told the other day) Wow I thought, time to exchange it. I did the exchange rate today and got a total of 428.00 and some change. But with my research and poking and prodding I've come to learn that Poland changed their money. So now is it true that my 500 Zlotych and 1000 Zlotych notes are worthless? Please let me know, I've got the worst heartburn since the day I got married!

these were the ones you probably had:

(check the 1975-1996 ones)

these are currently used:

in 1995 they changed it, and the 'exchange rate' was:
TEN THOUSAND old Polish zlotys = ONE new Polish zloty

I don't know if there's a way to exchange the old ones now...

not worthless, 500 old zlotys is 0,05 new zlotys and 1000 old zlotys is 0,1 new zlotys

and I don't know how much of it you have, but in the late 90s the old zlotys were nearly worthless. prices of common goods were counted in thousands zlotys (a paperback book could be 30 000 zlotys or so...)
in 1994 the cost of 1 USD was 22000 zlotys, so to have 400 USD you would need about 8 800 000 ZL....

They are probably worth the most to collectors.
Getting back into the thick (or rather thin as in thinning my paints) of it, not picked up a brush in some time so this may hurt a bit until I get used to the feel of them again

it's not that i think they're worthless... but to go on a currency exchanger and see 400+ US dollars for 1500 zlotych, your heart gets pumping, it's alot of money to me right now LOL... Then to find out this currency isn't used anymore and is being sold on ebay for 3 dollars really kinda feels like a punch to the face LOL Oh well, guess they'll just go back to my envelope LOL

@Cyberpaddy - they're so plentiful that their collector's value is still pretty low

@HR - yep, 1500 old zlotys is 0.15 new zlotys... which is about 0.04 USD. not worthless, I told you :D
