Golden Demon France - report

Post by mahon »

Hi all,

We've just returned from our trip to France. We did a lot of sightseeing in Paris and we managed to attend the French Golden Demon. :)

GENERAL REMARKS

I didn't have enough time to visit the whole Games Day. I only managed to reach the display cabinets, see and photograph the entries, see the warhammer museum, and watch the results of the painting competition.
But the quality of entries more than made up for this...

The only thing I am really unhappy about is that the planned meeting of painters, which was to take place before the GD, didn't work out. So we missed the only other 3 painters who wanted to meet anybody.... And this meeting was the major reason for which we wanted to go to the GD :(
Well, you don't always get what you want....

I also wish the other painters we already knew had more time to spend with us, just like we tried to do when they visited Poland. I know the event was bigger and more demanding time-wise than the Polish GD but I wish I could have spent more time with Jeremie and Julien... and to meet others.

Somehow the crowds made it more difficult to find other painters and meet them, talk to the ones we wanted to meet, and generally - spend some time together... We had to wait in the line for 40 minutes to get to the cabinets, and those who arrived later had to wait even more.

So I know Banshee and JMPN were there, and so was Degra. But were there any other foreign painters? I didn't know... I also didn't have any serious opportunity of meeting the French painters and getting to know them better. Maybe another time?

OUR ENTRIES

I didn't manage to finish my Defiler, but after seeing the entries I stopped regretting it! There was another Defiler, which was pretty close to my own idea. Not the same but pretty close. And I wouldn't like to compete against it....

Ana had a Mordheim warband of the undead, on a scenic base - depicting a cemetery and a necromancer conducting a ritual of summonning a vampire. The entry was so time-consuming that she didn't manage to prepare anything else, and swore she would go for smaller entries in future ;)

Kacpero had Arwen, but failed to complete his main entry - a Black Templars squad. Illusionrip had a Hive Tyrant, Arwen, and an Eldar Farseer. As I learned later, the Tyrant was supposed to be a part of a duel, but there was not enough time to complete it....

ENTRIES

The competition was really tense and the general quality of entries was very good. I was surprised to see how few entries were chosen in each category to make the First Cut... I expected to see more than 10 minis in each catergory after the first cut, and I believe there were much less finalists than I espected. Well, I think that with such a number of entries the jury had to limit the number of finalists to have enough time to take a closer look at each of them.

At this point I have to tell you I am very impressed with how smoothly and fast the jury dealt with their job! I don't know who was there, (except for Allan Carasco), but their work was very well organized and done really quick - especially if you take the number of entries in to account...

I tried to take photos of most entries, but it was impossible. The crowds watching the miniatures and pressing their faces to the cabinets made taking photos very difficult, so I apologize for the quality of my photos. My report is far from being complete, missing such important miniatures as the Slayer Sword winner.... I took the photo but it turned out totally blurred....

The choice of miniatures on my photos is absolutely subjective and was not based only on quality of the paintjobs, but shows the works which I considered particularly interesting for any reason: rare miniatures, funny conversions, good paintjobs, exceptional concepts....

Here are a few of them:

What surprised me is that many entries used the same ideas we considered for our potential GD works: remote-controlled vehicles, ork flying ship, nurgle dreadnought, resting Imperial Guard officer... eh :|

INTERESTING INDIVIDUALS

Some people at the GD wore interesting costumes. There were many imperial guardsmen and quite a few greenskins...

Kacpero noticed a person looking like a greenskin caveman with Stallone's Cobra's sunglasses... and I stumbled upon this goblin intellectualist:

and a group of older guys with excellent costumes, including a sigmarite warrior priest and an ogre.... whom I caught in the act of SMOKING

AWARDS

I was a bit surprised by some of the results, but I think this was dues to the overall high quality of entries, especially the finalists. It was really difficult for me to name my favorites and as we talked with each other, our favorites differed. So the jury had a difficult job to do, and I don't really think anybody who didn't win anything would mind it, because losing against such worthy winners is no dishonor!

I would like to congratulate all the winners (especially the ones whose works were also my own favorites). Special congratulations go to David Waeselynck. whose Dwarf Slayer won the Slayer Sword, and it did it in a really great style! This was a great piece!

Of our all entries, only Illusionrip's Hive Tyrant managed to win a Demon, and it got a silver one in the Monster/Cavalry category. Ana's warband made the first cut, which was her goal (and I am happy to say this warband was painted for me, so we will have a pretty unit in our display cabinet), even though some people were a bit disappointed not to see it among the winners. Our other entries didn't make it to the finals, but hey, we weren't there only for awards....

FINAL REMARKS

Going to the French Golden Demon was a great experience for me. I saw excellent paintjobs and not only a few of them but really many. I regret being unable to meet some of the persons I hoped to meet, but there's always another event at which we may meet.

Ana enjoyed the painting session and talking with visitors while painting, so she'd like to thank Jeremie for taking care of it and organizing the session. I think it's a good idea to give the painters opportunity of showing how they work and sharing their experience with others.

There's still much for me to learn to present comparable quality of paintjobs, but I think our participants didn't have to be ashamed of their entries and they can compete with foreign painters without feeling unsure of their skills...

If anybody needs a real kick in the *** to motivate them to painting, they should go to some French painting competition.

PS - bigger and much more photos are available HERE, with a few bonus photos...
