what do you think? On warseer.com butchflagannan wrote:So, I went to GenCon this past weekend. It was pretty weak by my taste. I went back in '03 and it seemed much better then. I dunno. ANYWAY. While there, I was able to get some news through an aquaintance of a friend of mine who was with me. I am not going to disclose the source, but they have their own miniatures game and miniature line, and they used to work for GW. I do not know how reliable the info is, but this gentleman said that within about 2 years GW will be going to ALL plastic minis (ZERO metal) and will also be doing them in prepainted fashion, such as hero clix. I find it hard to believe, but just so you know, Rackham is doing the very same thing, at least partially. They had two of the prepainted plastic Wulfen models at the Con in the display case and some REALLY COOL looking plastic knights. So I am going to leave it up to discussion from this point, but I think that is not the greatest of moves if it is true. What are YOUR thoughts?
GW prepainted - rumour true or false?

I wouldn't be much surprised if this was true information, not just a rumour.

I've asked Phil Kelly about it and he called it "complete bullshit".
Nevertheless that could be what the company wants him to say
I still don't believe they'd be drifting towards prepaints. Well, maybe they'd offer a few of their minis prepainted. But GW was always so proud of "selling hobby" (instead of "selling minis") that it'd be very hard for them to make such decision.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they went to all plastics, though I'd expect special character models would still be metal, as it will likely always be more cost effective for models with limited runs to be made of metal.
Prepainted, though, seems very unlikely. Assembling and painting the models would cost GW more money. They already save a fortune in production costs by having the end user take care of assembly.
Which is why I still for the life of me don't understand why Rackham is doing what they are doing. Plastics, I understand. They could switch to all plastics, and I think most people wouldn't have that big a problem with it. It's the prepainted that will lose them business.

It was predictable, that GW will produce all plastic figures, but I don't believe, that they will be pre-painted - in this situation, for example, GW will banish Golden Demons in near future. And ,as Tomash said, GW was always selling rather all hobby, than only figures. They will stop producing clippers, knives, glues, un-ready terrains, and all this other stuff ot once? I don't think so...
Rackham can afford ditching all paints because lets face it it was marginal profiting and its only 1 year in the market...they dont even have hobby related products apart from miniatures, GW has tons of profits with hobby related stuff apart from minis, going against that is utterly stupid business wise... isnt chaos black paint pot GW best selling article ever?...
Wild guess here but that paint pot sales only probably larger than all R profits put together...
On a side note rackham presence on stock market is currently suspended ( no one knows why and can be lots of things ) but one indication is that their share has lost around 30% in the last quarter. (probably transition )
GW is much bigger but kicking out of the door the hobby like R did will make huge losses on fan base. Can they afford not to feed the "giant" for a couple of years? Will shareholders like the huge loss? Will anyone on their right mind kill golden chicken egg for one hipotetical easter bunny?
Im well stocked (so well i can even sell) so F**K prepainted greedy bastards!
