Miniature Lighting.

Post by mose »

Hay all. Marry Chistmas.

OK here is the question. I am having a problem with directional lighting on a miniature. specifically the top of a bald guy's head. If it's light from the top ( which is all I know how to do at this point.) you would assume that the top of the head is the lightest highlight working it's way down.

I have been browsing mini sites, it seems that people that are master painters would not put the highest hilight on the top like in a circle it's kinda off centered.

I guess what im saying is that master painters seem to understand light on the mini better than I can seem to. A touch of light here a shadow there and bam it's awsome. I cant seem to do that.

hey, welcome to the forum! :D
well I also have similar problem - I've noticed that painters using nmm techniqge understand rules of lightning the best - maybe You should ask them directly? PM sent to Ana or Illusionrip for example should be more than helpful... :silenced:

It helps when you make a picture of the unpainted mini under a lamp, the metal reflects the points where you can highlight. It isn't always the best method, but it sometimes helps me.

I would recommend 3 approaches:

- the oldschool way: the more protruding parts are highlighted, while crevices and concave parts are shaded.
- Bren's way. no need to tell more
- "zenithal highlighting" - spray the mini with white spray from the point from which the light would fall on the mini. The spray should give you an idea of where highlights should be placed :)
