How to paint a realistic wood?

Post by ToMaZ »

Hi,

I'm currently painting my Warmachine Widowmakers and for the gun I wanted to create a wood effect beside the metallics. Now I've no idea how to paint it realistic enough. I've tried and it looks more like brown highlighted with stripes than it resembles wood :)

Does anyone has any good tutorials or tips for it? It's not really about the colours, but more the technique to make it look like wood :)

tnx

Lai, You should post whole photo of Your mini - not just close-up of the "wooden" part...

I would start with snakebite leather for the base color. The darker parts with snakebite+bestial brown and for the highlights snakebite+bleached bone.

Ok, I'll try that :)

And Lai, thanx for the link, but I think it would be quite hard to try that technique on the mini I'm painting... Allthough it would be nice to use it on my bedroom door ;):)

Paint wood grain with a bone color over black than wash with brown ink. Tada thats all you need to do . The brown will darken the wood grain/lines and will turn the black a nice rich walnut color.

I sometimes use Vallejo transparent paints: Woodgrain and Natural Wood.
