As suggested by Corvus i should really show you guys some of my previous work. Sadly it's as of now only one finished mini and 2 semi finnished ones to show you..
The two semifinnished ones, shelved for now to make time for the model i am working on at the moment:

good nmm, decent smoothness. what needs some improvement (badly! - if you want to move up from gaming quality painting) is the faces. you surely read the tutorial from Morsi on our site, didn't you?
Yes, the last one is the only one i would consider finished.
These minis were intended to be good looking gaming minis so therefore no elaborate displaybase.
I will really try to go all out on the mini i am working on now that is intended to be of display quality.
The guide is really good. Sadly i read it after i started with these minis. It will surely serve me well in the future though.
Definitely: the bigger contrast on model - the better it looks in the field
As for NMM - no advice from me since I cannot imagine myself painting this technique
