Post by Grenadier »

Hi Guys

I need some help

Having just started to paint Mini (I paint Historical or is that hysterical). I have been looking at stuff on line and alot of the figures have names etc Chaplain so and so.

Is this information avaliable in books etc or on the web do you have to read the codexs to find out about heroes of ecah chapter.

Any help would be appreciated.

The best source of photos and some basic infos are almost always Internet site of particular miniline manufacturer.

As to the GW stuff the best bits catalogue and color schemes are book from Collectors guide.
To know more about particular guy codexes are great, but most of the knowlege you can found using google

There are many many sources about painting skills and mini info. for the info, I suggest u to search the specific manufacturer. for the painting techniques, there are web-based resources like people's tutorials, hard copy books, or even some forums like this one. Well, I think if someone wants to receive tons of these load of info is kind of a bit too much and can get confusing, I suggest you can talk to local GW staff and they usually give u some good direction and help on mini painting. About what sources u want to learn from, it really depends on your own preference and experience.

It also depends a lot on if you're looking for a mini to paint because you think it looks cool, if its to be fielded in a game, if its to be a gift for someone, or if its to be sold.

If its because you think it looks cool, have a good time! Go wild! :D

If its to be fielded in a game (either by you or someone else), then which particular model it is can be very important. For instance, if you know nothing about Warhammer 40k, and you think you want to paint/play something Orky (hey, they look fun) then it becomes important to know if you need 5 of a particular type of figure to make a unit that can be legally fielded in a game.

Do you have any particular things you'd like to know about? And does the "intent" determination help any?

(I'm assuming you're talking about GW miniatures.)

Most of those special character info is spread out on different armybooks and codexes. Like inquisitor Coteaz, you can fiend his history and rules in the deamonhunter codex, chaplain cassius in the space marine codex, etc...
When I still read the white dwarf, there sometimes were character rules in it too.

If you want the info on those special characters, you need to go get the books... and some internet programs are pretty usefull too to find some GW books

Briefly, you can ask yourself or get advises from the others for the following issue:

1. What kind of mini you are looking for? (fantasy? 40k? mage? warrior?, etc..)
2. Why are you painting that specific figure or a group of figures? (own collection? gift? e-bay? gaming?)
3. For painting (highlighting, shading, blending, etc...) and modelling (basing, sculpting, converting, etc....) There are really tons of information from the people's website, official mini manufacturer, books and local clubs, etc....
4. It is quite time consuming and confusing when trying to look up everything at a time.
5. So, may be more efficient when u come up with a specific topic, and then search for resources to tackle that specific issue.

Good Luck
