Yes the company (Bastion if I remember correctly) shut down the game. Since the game uses software to keep track of xp and items which each figure carries (and this data is stored on a server) people were also unable to play the game, since the servers were shut down as well. The last thing I heard was that some fans and former employees gathered enough money to buy the servers and bring them back online.
There's a store now, showing some models. The plastic kits seem to have some nice price/quality ratio. As for the metals, due to lousy photos not much can be told about them. And yeah - the big beast is a plastic kit.

It would have been in the Toys R Us sale - it just looks like a cheap plastic toy.
I have always found their concept art amazing and would love to be able to purchase some of it but the transferance to 3D model not so good. Many of the poses look strange and some of the models look awkward. And as for the game mechanic .....
Currently painting 15mm's with an extremely large brush - one step away from dipping them in the pot.
