Deathguard Terminators

Post by althai »

Hi-

Since this is my first "real" post on these forums, I thought I'd begin it with an introduction. I'm althai, and I post somewhat regularly on the Brushthralls and Privateer Press forums. (I also have a CoolMini gallery.) The Brushthralls forum is pretty quiet these days, and PP is of course manufacturer-specific. I've been looking for a good painting-centric forum that welcomes any manufacturer's models for a while now, and Chest of Colors seemed like a nice friendly one.

My current project is a unit of Death Guard terminators, using the conversion kit from Forge World. The Forge World sculpts are amazingly detailed, which is awesome, but also creates issues. The kit only includes torsos and shoulder pads, so the rest of the terminators have to be made from plastic GW terminators, which are the opposite of detailed. :? I've tried to address this with green stuff, to make them look somewhat more cohesive, with a little success. Hopefully I'll be able to take them the rest of the way with paint, since I'm far better with a brush than I am with a sculpting tool.

Here they are, in all their un-primed glory. If all goes well, tomorrow the first of them will see some paint. I'll try to keep this thread updated with WIP pictures as I go.

It looks like you joined when CofC turned a bit quiet too :P There is good stuff in your CMON gallery. I remember your earlier works from on the PP boards and you've made some good progress these last years!

On topic, I always liked the forge world torsos, but just as you I don't like the fact that you have to assemble them with the plain terminator legs. You did a pretty good job turning those legs in something more 'deathguard' but I think they still look a bit plain compared to the torso's. You can work around this with painting though.

Looking forward to an update :)

No worries, we're going get loud again. And I mean it! (because I know why... )
Unfortunately the season was actually quite quiet here, and you had the bad luck of posting in such a quiet period.

The terminators look very promising for the moment. I agree with ToMaZ that the ForgeWorld parts are simply so good that they make it much easier to assemble interesting Nurgle models. Unfortunately they didn't release full Death Guard models, only conversion kits. Your work definitely improved the look of these parts which are taken from plastic kits. But there's still quite a bit to be done with painting to bring these parts up to the level of 'nurglishness' the ForgeWorld parts have. Some weathering, scratches, stains, and streaks of slime or oil can achieve this goal.

Good luck!

Wow, so it's been over a year since I last posted in this thread. The project is finally back on track, and I've mostly finished painting the leader.

I'm very happy with how he turned out. There are a few things I still want to tweak, such as more scratches on the armor in places (like the boots) which are too smooth. I haven't started building bases for the terminators yet. I'm planning to go for a space hulk kind of feel when I do.

Please give me critiques on the leader. If the rest of the squad goes well, I'm hoping that they may end up as my first golden demon entry.

P.S. if anyone is wondering why it took over a year for my to post my second WIP post: I started painting one of the terminators as a test model a year ago shortly after the project started. After a few hours I really didn't like how it was turning out, and that sort of killed my enthusiasm for this project for 6 months. When I came back to the project, I tried a different color scheme for a second model, and the same thing happened, and killed my enthusiasm for another 6 months. But I've finally settled on a color scheme I like, so I'm hoping for steadier progress over the next few months.
