I think it was already discussed here. has its pros and cons. if it wasn't for the fact I prefer to apply my primer with spray, I would probably try.
I saw many attempts of using gesso as a primer resulting in covering fine details, and that's not what I'd like to achieve. of course these might've been failed attempts, but they're the majority of what I've seen...

Covering details is also my main concern, but according to the article I mentioned that isn't a problem with Gesso.
