good, cause I don't really like themed contests. if all followed the theme strictly we'd get very similar entries - different models converted into surfers or something like that. I prefer loose approach to the theme and greater variety of entries.
but, I do agree that general level is bit disappointing. I think this is result of:

Looks like a random collection of averagely painted figures rather than a themed painting competition from a renowned manufacturer.

Unfortunately it sometimes happens to Wyrd contests. Maybe there are too many of them? I remember there used to be quite many cool entries in the past editions.

I think that the idea under such contest is to motivate people to try paint something new, that doesn`t have to be playable in wargaming. For example all winter Christmas contests ;)
There should be made a selection first - how much does an entry fit into the theme. It can be scary, stupid, funny - it doesn`t matter but suits the idea. Then the painting skills should be judged - since this one is a painting contest :-)

Not really too many of them (unless you count Iron Painter). They are having fewer and fewer every year.
