Working on this one but having a bit of a break. For those of you that know your Noise Marine background I won't need to explain his colour scheme, for those that don't, he's supposed to look like that. I'd appreciate some feedback on my highlighting and detail work so far (everything from the waist down is finished, except for the base). Is this better or worse highlighting than I usually do?

If you click on the picture it will take you to a bigger version that shows up the details better.

As for Oberon... well he seems to be an unmitigated failure, which is a shame, but at least I've learned something about what is and isn't liked.

Boring paintjob, aquatic/odd/wrong base (from the feedback I've had), weird face, not enough contrast, weak highlighting/shading, poor detail work on the antlers... I don't hear many positive things about him compared to the negative and I think I found it disappointing since I was so pleased with him when I'd finished. Not to worry, I can always redo him or get another one. If I never made mistakes I'd never learn anything, right?

I should add, I'm not just going off the feedback on Oberon here and there have been some positive things said about him... Maybe he's not a failure really, but I'm certainly not as happy with him as I was. At least people seem to like the model, if not what I did to him.

I've had the parts to convert this one kicking around for a while, which is a standard War Walker and one of the wings from an Eldar Epic scale Titan of some description.

As you can see, I've changed it quite a bit from the boring static pose that these come in as standard. Interestingly, I've seen a few tutorials over the years saying that this pose isn't possible due to balance issues and that the metal isn't strong enough... clearly this is a lie since as you can see this miniature isn't falling over. I've not done any of the filling yet or any painting, obviously. I'd like to give this miniature a slightly more interesting base, in part to raise it up to normal War Walker height (it's about 1/2" too short for that at the moment) so suggestions for that would be welcome.

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out, I'd be interested to know what you think too.

Oberon - come on, we're nitpicking on contest-winning pieces here, that's the strength of this forum.
Warwalker - interesting conversion, not sure if this will work on a gaming table. Hopefully you won't have to put them in B2B contact with other minis ;)

Oberon - I'm just being a melodramatic artist, I think :P I'll get over myself soon 8)

War Walker - Hadn't thought about using it in game, but now you mention it I'm guessing B2B will be a bit of a nuisance. Mind you, I've not had a game since shortly after 3rd Edition rules game out, so I suspect it won't be a problem!

Move on, paint another model. A different one. Keep this one as it looks now. This way you could compare him to your later paintjobs to see your progress.

And I think it's a pretty cool paintjob. One of my favorites of all your paintjobs. Nice natural colors, consistent color scheme, neat painting. Of course, he's not without flaws - the aquatic plants, the "I wore goggles while cycling" face...

But definitely one of the more interesting models. Could it be better? Sure! But did it have to be? It's up to you to answer this question...

Oh yes. And admit it, that's why you post your works here, for feedback, right?
And if one wants only some ego boost, why don't they create a "BOOST MY EGO" thread and ask people to praise him and his works. I believe many will do, even if only for fun.

Believe me, offering constructive feedback and nitpicking takes more effort and time than posting a "looks OK" message. Doesn't it deserve appreciation?

I think we're getting dangerously close to escalating this to more than it is. I certainly don't post here for an ego boost, I post here for a reality check since while I might be overjoyed with something I paint, you guys all give me the criticism that points out flaws I might otherwise ignore. I do appreciate all the feedback I get and I appreciate the effort required, so consider this a thanks to everyone that has contributed to my postings. If I want an ego boost, I just go and post on https://www.dakkadakka.com since I'm one of the above average painters out there ;)

So yes, lesson learned = Oberon good, could be better and to improve do X, Y, Z. Now I'd like to put the Oberon Issue to rest.

One brilliant thing about CoC is that I've been encouraged to experiment, I'm nearing completion on a miniature that's out of my comfort zone in colour and design so I'm hoping to get some interesting feedback on that one when I post it upon completion.

OK, now I am afraid you misunderstood me. I believed it was obvious that what I said was humorous. Yeah, I was telling my true opinion (that one can tell what kind of feedback they want) but not really addressing it to you and your approach.

What I meant was more like "if you come here you probably want serious opinions, don't you?"
So don't be afraid, no escalation was meant, maybe I just didn't make it obvious enough that I was just amused with the fact you considered some quite good paintjobs bad only because somebody showed what could be improved.

Now go and drink some paint. Always makes painters feel better ;)
