I'm not as familiar with AFP as AP. The difference in writer, editors, etc. plays a significant difference here.

I think something that is also not fully appreciated outside that part of the U.S. is what the attitudes and opinions are locally. I have lived not terribly far from this area, and lived in that general region of the country for a long time. There are attitudes and opinions and everyday experiences that simply do not translate through extremely brief media snippets. It is so much more complex than could ever be conveyed in such a format.

I used to deal with very racially-sensitive topics and issues when I worked in Memphis. I also dealt with them daily when I lived in Mississippi. It goes so far beyond the surface that is shown in media coverage that makes it out to the world-at-large. I know horror stories (figuratively and literally) of things that have happened in the last 75 years in areas around the South because of racism.

I truly believe that if everyone would help others look at how their local, personal interactions effect others and work to improve those -- be it working on racial attitudes, general moral values, or simple human kindness and being polite every day -- then the result would spread and help wipe out things that are problems everywhere.

Sorry for the soapbox speech, but you hit a nerve and a personal crusade.

LE this is my personal crusade too. Pls remember that my wife is Asian and my child in some degree too.
