Chest of Colors forum

Just wanted to put up some shots of my latest project, a Battle Wizard for Warhammer Fantasy Battle. He is still thoroughly WiP: the eyes need painted, the cloak needs more highlights, the hands are rough, the flames need finished, and a bunch of other little things need attended to. Oh, and the base needs done.

so i c thar dark linking end some other clasy tech - things that immissing is clean effect moust thingl looks a bit messy - meybe a new good brush ?? (what brush you are using atm ? )
About mage - his robes got inked ??
if yes - well thats not good - now they look like dirty one - in shadows
other thing is - it looks flat (the orange cap) i would sugest using GLAZE tech end add red color to all orange - morered in direction of base (so glesing starts at half the robe end each brush stroke ends at end of rombe - in that wey mouist pigment wil end on ends /)

your painting looks so much like out of GW book How to paint : "XY" - is that ?? em i right

if so we wil have for you some exorcize how to paint better end actualy how to forget somebad habbits from thous books

Yeah, he is a bit messy. I've been using the cheap "The Army Painter" brushes, though I just got an size 0 brush and size 1 brush from the Windsor & Newton Series 7. They are really expensive, but if they turn out to be half as good as I have heard they are, then the price will have been a good investment.

I did wash the robes. I tried several other ways of adding depth to the model without washes, but none of them worked. Plus, as I'm going for a style that looks good on the tabletop, washes and the other "clasy tech" styles are what I need to go for.

I like the idea of giving the robe a red glaze, and will have to try it out, since I have a good amount of wash mediums winging their way towards me in the mail. He did look quite flat in those WiP photographs. Since they have been taken, I have added another layer of highlights to the model.

And no, I have never read the "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures" book, though I do kinda like the GW style. It is not very subtle, but subtlety is not what is needed if you are painting up multiple units of 50 Empire Halberdiers.

Good in thous books ther is a lot of "bad" techs that give effect but actualy are a barier in future progress

Gw Style is okey is so called EM style end we mey divide it on 2 old EM - Classic 1 end New EM a well just new
end actualy non of them use washes as washes - rather glazes

trayed starting from bright color then "glaze in" shadows made from complementary (+ base) color ?? - thats actualy one of best ways

yes end no ... fastest way is always Air brush end " Diping "

but if you whana get Classy EM style - washes end inks - only for metaliks , end for saturacion - not for shadows - old Classy EM style is CLEN .. paintfuly clean

ther are ppl on forum like Mahon who can told you a lot of this particular style
end let me sey this Classy style won a lot of Golden Dildos end Sluty Sworlds

I like that glazing idea. I think I will give it a go this weekend.
When using that glazing technique, should I do my highlights before or after?

another tip when you gona go for glazing - dont start with desired base color (a mid tone you desire) start with base + highlight as a base
end glaze that in this wey you will get mid tones that got nice transicion to shadows , end shadows , after that as "base" whas actualy "base + highlight color" you got alrdy first highlight done - so just finish it end done ^-^

So, let me see if I have got it:

I need to basecoat the cloak in my base color (the new Blood Red), then...
...do my first highlight (Blood Red + Troll Slayer Orange), then...
...I need to start glazing with a slightly darker color than Blood Red, or just pure blood red? And as I glaze, I need to get darker and darker and I need to place the glaze lower and lower on the cloak, right? I will try and make my my glazes very transparent, so I will need to use plenty of the acrylic medium (I'm using Lahimian Medium, since I've heard good things about it. I will probably switch to the Vallejo equivalent once I run out of Lahimian; Vallejo is always very affordable, whereas GW overcharges a lot of the time).

your base coat is your first highlight
Blood Red + Troll Slayer Orange = base coat
First glaze = basecoat = Blood Red

good idea but Water on Wet Pslette will do end actualy it is extremly usable
