Barefists' Newbie Thread

Post by Barefists »

Hi everyone, I've only just made one display miniature in my short 6 months of miniature gaming/painting. So... bear with me as I make more? :)

I painted a model called "Trixie" from Ramshackle Games that I got for free with my purchase of bits for my Space Marines.

It's done using all GW paints (old range), I've heard that Vallejo paints are better, but I haven't had the chance to try them. While the sculpt was pretty cool, it was a little too skinny for my taste, so I fleshed it out a little with green stuff, a little WIP pic I took before painting:

This piece also marks my first time painting non-metallic metal, and first time using green stuff. :) I was scared as hell to try them, but it was very exciting to do something new.

Although I know it's really a very beginner piece, but I really hope the experts on this site can give me some pointers to improve my next piece? Thanks! :)

yeap, nice job on both, especially for a beginner. Regarding Vallejo being better than GW paints, it's not really true, they're different, color range isn't the same, so it just depend on your taste :)

Thanks for the replies! It's very encouraging. :)

One thing I like to ask is: Are the colors too saturated? I've been reading articles on CoC and other miniature websites, and they generally advice painters to grey the colors a little.

They look good to me, saturating or desaturating colors depends on your taste and on what you would like to pop or not on the mini :)

The use of greys is to mute colors and therefore to make those areas not the focus point of the mini

Haha! Ok, so basically the parts I want in focus are typically the most saturated.
Awesome, I didn't know that before - I thought being realistic meant every had to be greyed down :P Silly me.

Nice (boob)job! :)

I think
I heard vallejo paints are better.
is a quick conclusion, this shouldn't mean to throw out your GW paints! Better try them out, most people prefer them because of the bottles an the wide range of colors. By any means stay away from Vallejo Game Color.

Oh dear, I ordered a bunch of game color during the Maelstrom Games sale last month. :/ Oh well. I'll remember get the model color range instead next time, thanks for the advice!
