Bit of a newbie on the forums here and would love to learn more from painters around the world so I thought I would post some of my recent works.
Here are some pictures of my entry for the diorama category in this year's Golden Demon in Australia. With this piece I really tried to escape from the the classic 'people fighting and blood everywhere' type of Games Workshop diorama. I feel that this certainly has it's place and can capture atmosphere and action very well, but I wanted to experiment with something different. Whilst we do paint mainly military-based figures, the conflict in this piece I hoped would come from the fight that was about to happen. The skink chief is charging off and one of them firing a dart, but against an unseen enemy. It is a fight without taking the focus off the activity the unit is engaged in at that point in time.
I also tried to use the thinness of the diorama, the rising banks of the river and the trees on either side to focus the attention on the action of crossing the river. Suffice to say I won't be tackling something with this much resin for a long time, urgh!
A huge thankyou to Wiesern for the photos on this one!

Re: 'River Crossing' Skink Diorama
I've seen this one before, and I quite like it!
My only comment is that the sides of the diorama (the black parts) don't look all that smooth.

Thankyou for your replies guys!
I agree with Corvus about the sides of the base- they are not at all smooth, and I had a lot of trouble getting it right because the resin escaped from the mould. Somethign to do better next time for sure, but I will be having a rest from resin for a while now haha
I would like to clarify that I do not think combat-based dioramas are boring, they are not! I said in my original post I just wanted to try something different. Here the action comes from crossing a raging stream rather than fighting
How would you say I could improve the scales? More contrast or smoothness?

Re: 'River Crossing' Skink Diorama
but this is a combat-based dio, isn't it? it's just that it showcases only one side of the conflictDelmieth wrote:I do not think combat-based dioramas are boring, they are not!
I do like the idea and execution. some great terrain-fu there.
the only true issue I have with this piece is that on pics it seems that one skink shoots the chieftain, and other skink shoots the first one...
I don't think this is the story you wanted to present Don't know, maybe it's only because of the pic angles.
