Hi everyone from Southeast Texas! Just wanted to pop in and say howdy!

After looking around a bit, I guess I'd better tell y'all a bit about me. I'm...uh...an old lady compared to some of you young whippersnappers. I started painting miniatures back in 2001 with LOTR. Unfortunately, I had a medical condition develop that causes severe hand tremors. So I stopped painting smalls and started painting larger scale equine models (as you can see by my avi and sig. )

Painting the equine models helped me learn ways to work around the hand tremors, so I'm moving back into the small stuff again. I still love painting the equine but I also love the challenge of the armor and finer details. My goal is go get my minis looking as realistic as my equine models. So, I paint a lot of mounted figures but I'll paint just about anything if I like the sculpt. I enjoy a good dragon, human, or chaos demon too!

I don't mean to sound rude or anything but I see a lot of fantastic miniatures ruined because some artists really struggle painting the horse so they just sorta give it a lick and a promise. I'm always willing to help if someone has a hard time with a horse. I'm also sorta "known" for my work with painting with dry pigments - both regular pigments and metallics. Dry pigments aren't just for weathering any more!

Right now I paint commissions with equine models but I want to expand that into miniatures as well. My goal is to attend Games Day 2012 in Chicago and have a great entry for Golden Demon. I'd love to make the first cut. Heck I'd love to win the thing. I know, not realistic but if I'm gonna dream, I might as well dream big ).

I am really gearing up to start a business, not only painting but selling miniatures and hobby supplies. I'm also a published author and my writing has been ripped apart by top editors and agents, so I'm very accustomed to handling honest critiques.

And that's the biggest thing I'm looking for - good, honest, tough critiques. That's the only way for me to improve.

The hand tremors are still there and are the biggest hindrance to my improvement, but I continue to paint and I really want to fix the things I can fix!

I'm really looking forward to learning and improving my techniques.

dry pigments? we've been talking a little bit about using them for more than just weathering. nice to have somebody with some more experience to provide more info

Thanks Nameless! Sure - I'd be happy to post what I know. Let me look around a little more so I can put the stuff in the right spot.

Pigments are a rather recent development in the model horse hobby but ground up pastels have been used for years. They are very nice especially on larger scale because acrylics, even with retarder have a tendency to dry too quickly. I'd love to try oils but I have some very furry kitties and one very furry dog so the hair and the lengthy drying time would not work very well and I don't have the money for an airbrush set up. So, pigments it is.

well ther is a way to defurry oils - you paint all base colors in acrylic then build up shadows with oils .. somthing like pasting boots .. end leve that to dry end then do i ta again so at eny point ther is not enught oil to chach hairs (theoreticly... )
Air brush is not so gr8 - yuo will not get with that glare typical to hors hairs

end yup im realy intrested in your pigment tech .. as im using my own mixes of acrilic paints + pigments to make them matt end incrase contrast (producers are dusbags end dont add enught pigment to acrilic paint)

thats quite realistic goal with UK GD is harder - to much presure from GW stuff on certain factors
