hard to say anything constructive, as I've not been there and seen entries in flesh.
All I can say is - I'm not too surprised, have my own experience in judging GD PL with 2 guys from GW marketing department.

That's not a good sign, makes me uneasy about entering GD next year then. Perhaps i'll opt to go to a different competition.

I am a poor painter with very few exp. but I can see the difference between France, Spain and UK. Seems that GW new motto is "there`s no school like the old school"

Well judging this type and any other type of art is always subjective, but i must say even do all the gw pictures are kind of wierd in quality, theres a drop in quality, but im looking foward to see the minis that werent winners.

no news to anyone who attended GDs once or twice, but GD in most countries (all?) is like a giant lottery, less so on picking the top entries from the lower ones (but also there sometimes) and especially after they picked...say...the top 5 of a category. at a certain level most of the guys in the jury simply have no idea, because - sadly - they have no clue about showcase painting, because after they got hired, they stagnated their levels on what GW requires as far as painting goes from them and most likely don't spend a lot of time investigating into techniques and composition and all that.
EDIT: this post composition is horrible, but my head...I think you still get the point ^^
EDIT2: and yeah, I can see the argument "you dont have to be able to paint a picasso to judge a picasso" - yeah, but most critiques have at least some sort of expertise to show, like they studied that shit or are in the business for years, or... - most likely MOST judges (different from country to country) dont have that expertise - and then ofc you got the GW policy crap (sure it's their thing! and you got to be aware of it and then decide to enter on these terms or not) shadow over the whole thing.
EDIT3: so what do I want to say.... people should know by now what GDs are about and aproach the whole thing the way it is. don't take it too seriously and stay away if you expect a "fair" competition and can't deal with unexpected turnouts.
