Free Hand (cloaks)

I bet there's a tutorial for this somewhere on the internet, unfortunately I wasn't able to find one where the links still worked. Was considering doing some free hand on my retinue cloaks and I have some questions on how to go about it.

- What's the best way to do shading/highlights?
- Do I paint my freehand in a lighter color, then use inks/washes to smooth out the transitions?

Maybe I'll just experiment, but any tips would be appreciated.

I'm not an experienced freehand painter at all, but my advice is to start off with a simple line and try to make this look good: so have some basic lining around around and shading/highlighting. Once you're satisfied about this, you can try out more complex patterns.

Freehand is tough. The only time I've ever done it is just with black over a completely painted surface.
