Does anybody know a good tutorial on the subject of object source lighting? Thanks!

I don't have any links now, but I bet there were quite a few by Victoria Lamb (probably on her website or CMON), ShawnRL (CMON) and Eliash (CofC).

The brushthralls tut was exactly what I was looking for, thanks.

But I still don't understand which colors are best for the light source and the light's reflection. Maybe near-white for the light source and then a color for the reflection? Or does the reflection need to be as bright as the source?

The reflection should never be as bright as the source, unless you're dealing with a surface that has 100% reflectivity (or an albedo of 1, if you're an astronomer :-p). I don't think even a mirror's reflectivity is that high.
