Hey guys, been a long time (about five months if I recall). Haven't been able to devote much time to painting since I took up guitar in the fall and boxing in the spring, but if I finish one figure this year I want it to be this damned $50 inquisitor I bought.
The shield is pretty much old news although I finished the purity seals on it and painted the back which wasn't finished before. Haven't decided on the skull color since I'm going to wait to see what the rest of it looks like as a whole. Starting with the mid-tones, shading, then I'll do the highlights on all colors as the final step and as you can see there's still plenty of white.
I honestly think this figure is above my skill level with all the detail. Just going to take it slow, do my best and hopefully it will come out as something I can be proud of.

Something of an update, no true highlights as of yet and still don't even have the mid-tones placed in certain areas. Would say I'm maybe 1/3 of the way finished, but that may be pushing it. Also beginning to think using that much metallic bronze was a big mistake.
Personally I am not concerned about that metallic red, I am more concerned about the mix between that metallic red and the pastel green...it is somehow giving too much color for what is my personal palette.
What I would personally suggest would be first to shade off some metallic with brown, so to achieve less brilliance and reflection, and to wash part of that green again with the same or similar shade of brown, for example simulating some sueprficial rust. This would enhance the link between the metallic and the pastel green.
The only other remark I have is that being a resin miniature, it takes longer to make its surfece smooth and clean. I still see some irrugularitis on the surface and this would decrease the quality of your nice job.
Apart from this, I am sure that you will come out with a nice piece and if you consider it above your skills and ability, this is the right time to force your limits. Go ahead, job is nice and you will succeed.
Ciao
Doc
@Doc - Thanks for the feedback. The mid-tone is going to be bleached bone with green shading, then a white highlight. Hopefully that will mellow it out a bit, but I'll keep your rust idea in mind if it's still too much.
@ Demi - Nah, no freehand planned. Figure is plenty detailed and I don't want to push my luck. Maybe in the future.
Progress is plodding along slowly as I've been devoting an hour or two to painting every day after work. Here's a couple photos taken on my magnificently awesome black t-shirt backdrop since I don't have a proper light box at the moment. Pretty sure I'm going with Doc's suggestion to add some brown rusting over the green along with teal oxidization eventually, but in the mean time I still have a couple concerns:
1. I'm thinking cooler colors for the face or should I go with warm skin tones?
2. The front of the figure still seems too busy, is there anything else I can do to make it easier on the eyes?
3. Apparently there's an =I= symbol on the front of the shield which I mistakenly painted green; Should I fix this and any color recommendations for the other =I= marks on the figure?
Thanks in advance for any advice, appreciate it as always.
It looks good, for the front of the mini i would use a lighter copper color so it would look less heavy.
As for the face why not use both warm and cold color, warm for the shadows and cold for the highlights .
The shield is nice, it dosent have to be red or white.

Wow, the model is looking better and better. Trying to catch up with the thread and answer your questions:
1. Go with cooler colors. Pale, almost never exposed to sunlight. Think: Vader after his mask was removed in RotJ.
2. It will be difficult, as it's the GW style - full of details. On a larger photo it will not look that busy, on a smaller one all thedetails are squeezed into small space. Maybe mute some colors a bit? These metallics are very shiny, which makes them stand out so much. Maybe glaze some of them with the color you used on his armor/clothes?
3. Leave the shield as it is now. This limited palette works really well on this model. The shield looks just fine now.
Thanks for the feedback. Going to do my best to achieve Mahon's pale skin suggestion, although I was having a rough time with Rex's face and botched it pretty bad. Spent the rest of the session fixing it, but some of the sculpt detail is gone and it could still use some work. Taking a break from that for now so I can come back with a fresh pair of eyes to finish it up.
Started on the retinue in the mean time and it's problems, problems, problems. The bottom ring on the sheath broke off and there's a mold line which was missed and needs to be filed. May be a bit premature to post pictures since this is only one night's work and it's very dull without any highlights. Also thinking I may want to integrate some free hand on the cloaks after all.
On the plus side everything seems extremely easy comparatively after spending so much time working on Inquisitor "overly excessive detail" Rex.
