Deathwing Terminator 28mm bust

Post by Corvus »

In september I posted something about 28mm busts in the brainstorming section of the forum https://www.chestofcolors.com/forum/view ... =38&t=5913. I've cut up an Assault on Black Reach Terminator to use as a bust, the plan was to paint it as a Blood Angels terminator (inspired by Space Hulk).

But after assembling the bust I put it aside and continued working on other projects. But a few weeks ago I had the idea to paint up a unit of Deathwing terminator, and this bust would be very useful to use as a test subject! I'm not going for showcase quality here, just a good gaming quality.

I've been trying out a streaky technique, I think it turned out well, except for some areas of the helmet and the back.

it looks pretty nice, but concept does nothing for me.
the idea behind painting busts is to paint something in a different scale, concentrate on face, which is crucial when it comes to showing emotions, try to bring those emotions and make the bust live. At least that's how I see it :)
Choosing a fully-closed helmet guy in 28mm as you subject for bust painting is IMHO meaningless.

Yeah I know it looks silly  but it's very useful as a test piece you know :)

I've thought about cutting up something like a Cadian sergeant, maybe this will look more like a conventional bust, but in 28mm.

I like the style on this one. Only thing I would want to see is some of the sharper edges cleaned up, granted I realize this was just a test piece and that may be irrelevant. :)

Thanks for the advice. Yes it's a test piece, but any tips which might lead to a better result on the definitive minis are very welcome.

To you mean I should do some harder regular highlighting on the edges? Might do that with some pure white... used Ivory as the final highlight right now...

I quite like the idea because it's just so different. I think a helmet can look as cool as a face if you only do it well enough.
This seems like army-painting quality on something which would deserve treatment better than even a normal single model.... but you say it's a test piece so it doesn't matter.
I like the idea and that's it!

Started working on the details yesterday... iconography will be mainly red, eyes green... What I hate about painting terminators is the Crux Terminatus (the cross symbol with the skull on their left shoulder pad). I don't really know what to do with it. Usually it's painted white or grey... will this go well with the beige of the armour? I've basecoated it in a bluegrey, not really happy with it :( but I'm out of inspiration for this one.

Another question: The area where I still have a problem of what to do is the back: around the rectangular lid, you know what I mean? I'm using the streak technique for both highlighting and texturing, so that why I have have left some darker streaks near the bottom of the surfaces. But I think on the back it doesn't look that good. Maye the part above the lid shouldn't have the darker streaks... what do you guys think?

Thanks for your help!!

The Crux Terminatus is ussualy portrayed as stone but I agree painting it also in a light tone might be not good with the rest of the armour.
Maybe you can paint it in a dark/black marble style so it stands out more? (maybe mix some delicate green tones in there as well for special effect)

Hmm thanks. I will probably use dark green on other parts of the miniatures as well, so maybe that's a good option.

Maybe some dark green gem effect on the entire symbol? Or do you think this will not go well together with the gritty look of the armour?
