I think the sculpt itself isn't that bad, it's just the face which isn't really well done.

To be honest, I don't think it's all that bad. OK, it's not on the same level as the better part of miniatures these days. But it's not a bad sculpt.
What I think is to blame, is the paintjob, which doesn't help the sculpt and instead of showing you can do something good with this model it creates the impression that the miniature cannot look good

I think that a good painter would be able to make the face look good. And maybe then people would be less critical about the sculpt?
