Red Karnagh WIP

Hi guys I guess it's time for another comeback on these forums since I've been away for a while once more. I want to show you what I'm working on: a Drune Red Karnagh.

I'm going for an alternative skin tone here: some red-brown was mixed in the base coat, together with a touch of violet. Shading was done by mixing in more brown and violet, for the highlights I used light flesh with some pink mixed in. I finished the skin with a glaze of the basecoat with some extra violet.

I'm not 100% happy with the final result, some highlights are a bit too rough (like on the chest) but some areas look pretty decent (left arm and hand). I've mainly been doing gaming quality stuff and 40k for the past year, so it really takes some practice to start working on a mini like this again.

Just a touch more shading downward on the chest and a bit more highlight on the toes and top of the feet. The transitions are just a little too abrupt to the shadows. I hope this helps, it is a lot better than I have done.

I'd say that it's shading which is a bit rough, not highlights - which seem fine to me. maybe after seeing the clothes painted the feeling will be gone, but now the shadows look too abrupt to me.

I like the progress so far, having recently gotten some proper paints I'm hoping for a bit more progress but I find it difficult to get my head round the deep shadows and strong highlights :?

Can't agree with your more CB. The deep shadows and blinding highs seems to elude me as well. It's a bit like theatrics I suppose - You have to exaggerate to make it look real...

As for the mini at hand I'm not to fond of the skin. It doesn't look smooth enough to me (not that I could do it better, but that's another story...). The armor on the other hand I really like. Nice work there.

Maybe a glaze/thin wash might clean up the skin?

Good luck

Thanks guys.

I plan on shading the armor a bit more, it's kinda flat in certain places.

And your comments on the skin: yeah I wanted something a bit more subtle, but when painting I decided to put on some extra highlights. Some might be too strong yes, but isn't miniature painting constantly learning from your own mistakes? :)

Anyway I finished his headpiece and eyes, basecoated some other stuff and assembled the base. The grass you see is only temporarily there, it won't be primed together with the rest of course.
